You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Current setup - Juicy 3SL, original pads, Superstar Vibe rotors in 203/180 on an '09 Trance X, me: 90kgs/190lbs approx.
Looking to get a set of Formula ORO K24s, but what rotor sizes? Would ordinarily have just gone like-for-like but would 180/160 be better? Only problem would be that the OH has 185/160 Elixirs on her Camber and I want bigger brakes than her!
180 both ends .
Are you happy with how 'stoppy' your current brakes are? Oros will stop better for a given rotor size, partly because if they are new or freshly bled they will squeeze better and overheat later, and partly because in my experience (3 sets of oros and 3 sets of juicys on various bikes) they are just a bit better.
bigger rotors will offset some of the weight saving you make if you are bothered, but less likley tpo overheat and better at stopping because of leverage stuff someone on here will explain beter than me.
if it helps, I weigh a whisker less thanb you, and have 203/180 rotors on my 170mm 'mini dh' bike and 180/160 on my xc bike. And I found proper formula rotors waaaaay grabbier (and more expensive!) than superstar ones for some reason.
Not really happy with the Juicys, hence the upgrade - I am hoping that the Formulas will be significantly better than the Avids!
Demo'd a Spicy with the RX1 brakes last year and that was 180/180, and they were the best brakes I've ever used which is why I'm going for Formulas, but I appreciate that the K24s are a different/older model so may not feel the same or have the same power.
They're pretty strong brakes... I tend to run 203s on the front anyway, since they're not drastically heavier and give more leeway for bad performance (fouled pads, poor maintenance on my part, etc) but I've run my dh bike with 180/160 after bending a rotor and it worked just fine.
So, on my regular bikes it ought to be 180/160 but ends up being 203/160. That's good for XC bimbling or incredibly brake-dragging fort william descents. The 160 rear went a very pretty colour but it didn't miss a beat.
