I've bought a Marin Eldridge Grade 2011, but the fork doesn't feel all that great so I will be upgrading it. The problem is I don't know what size steerer I need and if I need to also get a tapered one or not.

Please help?!

You need a non tapered fork. so standard 1 1/8th steerer.

If you are buying new then you can cut the steerer down to the length needed.
If you are buying used you need to measure the steerer on you're current fork. So from the top of the fork crown to 5mm below the top of the stem. will be the miniumum length needed.

You will need to swap the crown race (a metal ring that the headset bearings rest on) from the old forks to the new ones. This sits on top of the fork crown. These can be a pain to remove. If you use a small flat headed screwdriver to get under it. and tap it gently working you're way round to loosen it.

Great description from Trailflow.

For the fork, assuming you have the stock fork, Marzocchi Marathon LR, is this set up for you? have you tried adjusting the +/- air pressure? see here for the manual

If you have tried this and you still want a different fork, as you appear to have limited knowledge of bikes, thiking that it would be cheapest in the long run to go to a good LBS, and buy a fork from them, and get them to fit and set up.

Thanks Trailflow, that's about the most helpful reply I have EVER had on a forum, I think I'll stick around here a while!

If I decided to transplant the parts from this frame over to an On-One Carbon 456 frame here then would the parts transplant OK? I have also bought some 150mm FOX forks for the new frame?

The new frame is here - http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/FROOCAR456-BLK-18/on_one_carbon_456_frame_limited_edition___original_matt_black_with_black_decals___18_in

I just can't get on with the Marin so will sell the frame and any parts that can't be transplanted on soon too...

Thanks!
