Was in the shed yesterday and noticed a big gouge down the stancion of one of my forks.
TBF i got the fork second hand, for £150 ish, but it was mint condition and now it isnt.
Pretty sure my brother in law (not a bike guy) must have leant the bike up on a rock when we went for a ride to the pub a few weeks ago, but ive had that bike out twice ever and now the fork is wrecked.
Sadface.
Ive deburred it, and got a smear of two part epoxy (gorrillas version of araldite) over it, to try and do a fix, but wondering if its worth looking for a new fork upper assembly, before the fork gets compressed and the bushes and seals get wrecked.
anyone got any idea how much it costs to have a new stancion leg pressed in?
What fork? Some the replacement uppers aren't too much.
I can't help with a price, but I know that Slick n Slide do this kind of work 'cos I've seen it on his Insta.
Give Rick a bell and ask.
If the fork is only £150 maybe not worth the replacement. A friend fixed his with nail varnish on a pair of forks he wasn't too bothered about and just kept up with maintenance.
Keep an eye out on ebay for spares/repair
If they are 650b ribble had some really cheap forks available the other day.
RSF suspension down near Plymouth have been doing stanchion replacements for years now and can accommodate most forks. They've replaced a steerer on my forks that was too short and their turnaround was really quick but theyre often quite booked up in advance. Worth a call but you might be getting close to how much you paid for the fork for it to be replaced.
About £100-£130 for a ND Tuned stanchion (plus labour)
I've used RSF, not for stanchion replacement but they were good.
I believe Jtech do it.
Stirling bike doctor did my creaky steerer but he has shut down
I've done a similar repair, not a stanchion though, with metal/steel putty, the two part stuff you mix together in your hand and it gives off a little heat when it's ready, araldite didn't bond that well and fell out after a short time but the putty it replaced stayed put, sanded it down and painted over, good as new, it depends how deep the gouge is though.
My mate used RSF for the same issue. They replaced his Kashima stanchion for a reasonable price.
Another RSF customer here and highly rated.
Pedals in Edinburgh do ND Tuned replacements.
