I’m doing a travel change on some Pikes. RS says to use their own 0w-30 oil.

Looking in my box of oils I’ve got a bottle of Torco MTF-R 80W “equivalent of 10W30 and SAE30” which I’ve labelled up as “foam rings”
The other grades the bottle lists on the back (75W and 85W) replace 20W and 40W respectively. That makes me things the 30W is the important bit and this is the right stuff - it for lubrication rather than damping and the right weight. Anyone know more?

(It’s years since ive done a home service. I’ve also got various stuff labelled up as RS5 equivalent, RS15 equivalent and Torco “medium” labelled “Fox”. I’m guessing those are all damping oils)

Of course i could have just googled. 0w30 is going to be thinner at mtb temperatures than 10w30 so i need to go get some more oil.

This kind of thing has come up before, I think various industry types have said just buy car oil fully synthetic 0w-30w from Halfords or similar as much cheaper than the SRAM oil & it's the same product.

Sure - all the bike co oils are just rebranded motor oils anyway. the difference between 0w30 and 10w30 was what was catching me out.

Its only for lubrication anyhow isn't it?

You need 15ml. You have to buy it by the litre.

Hence i have loads left, can sell some if its a thing? Like a couple quid for 35ml plus postage? (Depending on getting some suitable bottles to transport)

The rockshox stuff is pretty comparable to modern fully synthetic motor oil in terms of cost, particularly as you only need 1l of it to last forever.
Hence I just got some of that.

That's why i've got so much of the others. Thanks for the offer but looks like I cand get a Litre for less than £5 within a 100m walk

Ow30 oil
plus Weekend37 taking 37% off
It's not going to be worth you finding a bottle and posting any at that price

I used 5w30 motor oil on my RS Yari 6 months ago, nothing has exploded so far so unless its eating the fork from the inside out then it seems ok.

Yes - and which really helps a lot as well:

some "pm 600 military grease" onto the upper seals.
This stuff makes the fork soooo smooth.

Issue with the oil: the quantity is important. Many forks - even brand new ones - suffer from lack of oil.

Roughly correct viscosity, correct amount of oil and the grease stuff for the upper seal ... this will transform the fork!
(grease for the upper seals: don't take some bearing grease or so. That's way to thick. pm600 is perfect.)

I have a link somewhere, basically an oil table that lists known brands by viscosity. The results are surprising to say the least, just because it's what is marked on the bottle doesn't mean it's what you are actually getting.

I ended up getting a Castrol close equivalent to the standard Marzocchi 15W stuff, IIRC mine is labelled 10W.

Will dig it out when I get a chance (not on my computer right now)

Your local MX store may be able to sell you some of this which is the real stuff -

I think these are the droids you are looking for http://www.peterverdone.com/suspension-fluids/

It's just weird that mtb companies relabel and change the ratings and hike the price

We have a winner!

Cheers 🙂

Though that only covers the damping oils. The lower legs are just using an engine oil for lubrication but it sounds like there isnt any point in just buying something at random with right spec written on the bottle!

I had the correct stuff but the stupid leaky bottles sram used meant it ended up in the bottom of my toolbox.

Tf tuned told me it was totally fine to mix the remaining drips with my 15w for lyrik lowers.

They also said 15w would probably be totally fine anyway.
