Hello.
Looking for some fork mounts to build the bike rack in the back of my van.
Something like these https://mtzoom.com/products/cycle-bike-fork-holder-mount-for-car-roof-rack-van-floor-4-adaptors which would be ideal as they have adapters for many types of axles (I have QR, 15mm and QR20)
.
However, all of my bikes are mediums. They will all fit under the bed no problem with those mounts, an inch or so to spare on my biggest, more on the others.
Problems may arise if I have friends with XL bikes, or massive stacks of spacers under the stems or just a weird size/geometry, or if I buy a proper DH bike or if....
.
Most mounts like that appear to have a large, unnecessary piece of metal between the ground and the axle, just a wee bit to allow you to tighten the axle should be enough surely.
.
So the question is, does anyone know which mount of that type has the smallest ground to axle height? I don't fancy emailing every manufacturer and was wondering if someone had come across this before and already has the answer
Might depend on your through-axle type what clearance you need? I've sorted an in-car carrier using 2 x mounts (9mm qr for a road bike and 100mmx12mm TA for another road or gravel disc bike. Thankfully the TA on my disc bikes both have DTSwiss ratchet TA which mean you don't need a full rotation to tighten it. Tried another bike without the ratchet-style TA and couldn't tighten it fully...
Mine are
QR - easy, finger tight with the knob and then close the lever which can be done with next to no clearance. Five of these
Manitou 15mm through axle. Uses a 6mm hex key to close it. L shape ball-ended hex key will also go in with next to no clearance below.
Marzocchi QR20. This does need a wee bit below the axle level to let the QR lever turn properly, nee to measure it but will probably be an inch and a half to two inches
Bear in mind we have these sort of mounts in the van and a friend with a pair of fox forks turned up and it wouldn't fit because they have quite a large rebound adjuster sticking out underneath so we've needed to lift it up off the floor more.
How about just fit qr mounts then use fork up adapters for the through axles.

Definitely an option, but which of those is lowest?
.
The valves and adjusters and things on my forks stick down about half an inch at most, is that fairly typical?
I was looking at Blokpods (similar to those but might just get a block of wood and drill an appropriate sized hole though it. That way they can be whatever height I want and cost almost nothing.
I've been looking at making my own with some old old hub axles and some wood. Think I've got a clever adjustment system too to allow for bikes with different wheelbases while still holding the back wheel in place
I made my own with some plastic pipe fastened onto a block of wood with metal brackets. The block of wood is then bolted to a sheet of plywood. Can be rotated too. Used for a couple of years with no issues. Make them any shape and size. Could even use a long bolt with optional spacers to raise or lower the entire mount.
