Morning all

I have a Specialzed carve comp, which Im pretty happy with however the fork bottoms out before I have even left the car park

I weigh approx 95likos btw

It is fitted with an XC32 TK 29er fork, so I have been looking at new forks but my question is

What are the main differences between

Rock Shox Reba
Rock Shox Recon Gold
Rock Shox SID

These all seem to be about the same price, they are all available for the 29er

Or do I just fit a stronger spring

Also my current bike has a tappered steerer, can I fit a straight steerer with some sort of adapter I think I found an adapter by hope but the description was a little unclear

Thanks in advance
j3

Assuming you're talkign about on Merlin. We had this dicussion last week as i was buying the for a mate. 🙂

the Rebas @ £349.99 (with 10% further off) won.

Yes you can fit standard 1 1/8" steerer but will need a lower headset replacement instead of your 1.5"

Funnily enough, he had the same issues you have, with same forks, although lower weight than you too. His was on an Orbea 29er.

I've got the Rebas' here on my desk for him actually.

How did you know 🙂

I was thinking Rebas simply because they seem to be the standard fit on the next level of bike up from mine

The consensus on here and Bikeradar was for trails buy the Rebas, for racing get the SID's

What are the main differences between

Rock Shox Reba
Rock Shox Recon Gold
Rock Shox SID

Speaking from a 26" wheel point of view

Recon - Entry level air fork, silver version with steel uppers, Gold with aluminium (anodised to that nice gold colour)

SID - Race dual air fork with light weight uppers and lowers, can be a little flexy

Reba - Mid range dual air fork that does the job well. This is what I use (26")

Who says new Sids are flexy - not me 🙂

At least not compared to a Reba with the same dropouts.

Sid = Little lighter and xc firmer maybe vs doughball plush - but the xx damping is v. Good..

Reba or a Fox float sound ideal for you.

I think its gonna be the Reba

I have made enquires about one in the classifieds but made 2 posts plus an email without reply, so im thinking steer clear of that one maybe

Hi Steven,
I've also got a carve comp have have the same issue with the rubbish XC32 TK 29er fork on my Carve Comp, what forks did you go for in the end ? has it made much difference to the ride on you Carve ? and can I ask what price you got for the XC 30's on ebay? I notice that this years carve comp and binned those forks (i wonder why), I was also thinking of upgrading the brakes and the crank have you any plans to upgrade further. I'm only asking as part of me is thinking about selling the whole bike and starting again.
Cheers buddy Jim

Hi jim, I bought a set of Rebas for £150 out of the classifieds on here, tbf they are not the best but they are a million times better, plus when I get them serviced I think they will be even better

I sold the xc32 for £90 inc postage which was £8.80 on eBay

Im also waiting for bits to break so I can upgrade the drivetrain to XT 2 x10 but am pretty happy with the brakes

Have looked into selling it and starting again but I think it's only worth £550ish, if I had my time again I would spend a bit more and build a Coitic Solaris for sure

Cheers for the update i3w3ll3r, I've just brought Rock Shox Recon Gold TK Solo Air Forks 29" for £229 from chain reaction. Did you need to buy a headset replacement adapter thingy? I also regret buying the carve, its a shame cause I think the frame is quite good but the choice of components was rubbish, I'd also like to upgrade to an XT 2 x 10 next. regards Jim
