I have never been proper off road biking before. When I was growing up my friends were always trying to get me into it, but for one reason or another I never did try. Something recently has got me interested and I'm building a bike based on a Kinesis Maxlight XC2.
I was originally planning to build a tourer, but realised I have overspecced the components and have decided to make it dual purpose trail/touring. Unfortunately I have bought combined shifters / brakes ST-M760's which are mechanical, and a nice set of xt v-brakes. I also have a set of wheels that aren't disc compatible.
So here is my question. Should I get some BB7's or similar and go disc, meaning new wheels too (not really a big deal), so that I can get some disc forks, or are there forks out there somewhere that will fit my requirements?
The frame needs 85-130mm travel, and has a 1 1/8" steerer.
Help!
depends how deep you pockets are. if money dont matter, disc is better 99% of the time off road. and there are plenty of forks out there to suit.
If your able to return the brakes and wheels then definatly look for disc setup. Avid bb7 are good mechanicals..
It seems a waste not to use those component but your obvious issue is locating forks with v-brake mounts. New this is a big issue due to the lack of forks with the mounts, though hopefully some-one else may have some suggestions, or go 2nd hand. Also I'd suggest maybe a fork in the middle of your travel range with a lockout (for tours duties) would be the easiest solution. Maybe an older set of Rockshox Reba's (pre 2010?) and budget for a good service.
That's not to say I'd choose v-brakes over disc, but in your situation, unless you have money to burn or can return the parts, it will be the most economic solution.
