Pushing the roadie across the gravel drive it picked up a sharp stone that jammed the front wheel solid, hmmm thinks I can this happen at speed down the road and smack my face into the tarmac ? 😥
Any one ever here of this happening or is it paranoia ?
Clearance from tire to crown is about 5mm.
Whatever clearance you have, there will always be a stone 1mm bigger.
However, when riding, the centrifugal (centripetal?) forces will usually throw a stone off before it gets to the fork. But it might then crack the down tube. 😛
OMG just fuel my OCD paranoia even more 😯
Yes, had this done when riding down a newly surfaced road. Didn't stop the wheel dead but made a horrible sound. When I stopped and dislodged the stone chipping it had scored the underside of the fork. Kept riding it for another couple of years till I got rid of the bike and it never worried me once while riding.
There used to be things called flint catchers. They were wire cages connected to the brake mount which rubbed the tyre and dislodged sharp stones before they could go round and puncture. You could put a bit of gaffer tape on the fork do the same thing.
There's pretty much no way a tiny stone could stop you dead
- it might get forced in and give you an instant flat front tyre though, so still plenty to worry about 😉
