Bought a new set of Manitou Mattocs in the sale from CRC a few weeks back. There was a bit of play in what i thought was the headset so i got round to changing the bearings today (which actually did need changing ) and there is a definite notch or movement in the fork bushings. I have emailed both CRC and Manitou customer support to see what the next step in sorting it will be. But in the meantime this is something i have not encountered before. If i sent them say to TF Tuned would it be an easy fix or is it on the more complicated side.

Cheers

TF will charge full whack for service + bushing work, £130+ iirc? CRC will likely just swap them for another set

my factory 36's which came on a new bike at the end of may had a bit of bushing play noticed almost straight away, got sent back then returned saying they where within tolerance. its certainly more than i'm happy with and more than ones on mates bikes. once i've got my last race of the year out of the way there going into to TF to get looked at and hopefully improved.

It's normal for there to be a tiny bit. It's only a problem if you notice clonking whilst riding, or if they bind because of the slack. If it works fine then it's fine.

molgrips, i need a bit more riding on it to be sure. There was a very noticeable clunk last week but the bearings were shot. These have now been changed out so a wee ride out tomorrow will see how they feel. From just playing about on the street they are really not that bad. Only a couple of rides will tell. 🙂

in my case i understand a  little is normal and i've never felt it riding but it is a lot more than any of my mates forks.

TF site says bushing resizing is included in service costs so may as well get them serviced and bushes done.

mine do actually improve if i leave the bike upside down for a while when i assume the oil takes up the slack.

You’ve definitely got the crown race the right way up?

I of course have never made such a mistake in a rush to go riding,,,

I had Manitou Marvel 100 mm that came with my bike in the late part of 2013 and they had no play at all. Recently I bought 120 mm Marvel, 2017 model and the annoying busing play is there from day one...

Ok, keeping my hard earned for now. Did not notice any play while actually riding today. If it gets any worse I'll fire them to TF Tuned but I'll keep riding them which I all honesty is what they were made for. Cheers all.
