Hi I've just bought a 2012 commencal premier s frame which is a 100mm rear and originally had a 120mm fork could I run a 140mm fork with this frame?? Any reply would be most welcome thank you
A 140 fork in a 120 frame isn't a huge difference. Unless you run your spring pressure sky high some of that extra 20 mm of travel will be used up in sag. Calculated out, if you add 10 mm to the fork's stroke your head and seat angles will be a bit less than a half degree slacker and your bottom bracket will rise about 3.5 mm.
It doesn't sound much but I found it noticeable and the improved handling on descents and rougher terrain came at the expense of barge-like steering everywhere else
Thanks Rocketman the forks I'm looking at are fox talas 110-140mm if it makes any difference?
Had very similar U-turn Pikes on the bike in question. 120 mm was definitely the sweet spot and in practice I tended not to use the 100/140 settings unless things were going properly up or down. Useful to have the choice though & imo better than a fixed 140 fork
Thanks mate very much appreciated so in your opinion should I wait for 120mm fork or go for these Talas's? How did you find the bike I've only just started to build it up my giant trance X4 is my main bike this is more of a mess about bike
Erm personally I would find some 120s
IIRC the Talas are either 110 or 140 whereas my Pikes could be set to any travel between 100 & 140
Thanks Rocketman 120mm forks it is
