Are the trails in the Forest of Dean suitable for a gravel bike?
Thanks

By trails do you mean Verderers (blue) and Freeminers (red), if so then yes, both of them are fine on a gravel bike, Freeminers has some roots but they're not exactly horrific, Verderers coming down has a fast last section which on a gravel bike will mean keeping the wheels on the ground as much as possible, would still be fun though.

You'd also be able to do the Countdown/Launchpad run as well on a gravel bike, all the jumpy bits are on countdown now and are not exactly difficult on any bike.

Everything is doable on a gravel bike. Just depends on how fast you want to go and your skill / confidence.

True enough, although I'd love to see someone do the GBU drops on a gravel bike; I definitely don't have the skills for that!

I’ve seen a CX & XC racer at Mallards on her gravel bike a few times.

I raced my 33c SS CX bike @ SSEU2010 there, after 4 laps I felt really beaten up that evening.

The blue and red are both doable, don't think it'll be as fun as a regular mtb though - lots of non signed 'gravel' trails and fire roads though.

There is loads of trails for gravel bikes but as said above things like the Dowies etc are more fun on a MTBike but loads a XC trails for your gravel bike have done y2k on a gravel bike bit hairy over the rocks at the end and the drop sometimes you do stupid things and get away with it.

As above, they are doable. The question is why would you want to? There are far better gravel routes in the forest, check these out for starters www.dirtydevil.cc

+1

I's say only if you don't have an actual mountainbike to ride. I see gravel bikes on the fire roads all the time and feel sorry for them. Still better out on any bike than stuck behind the computer like I am atm.

Reasons for doing the trails on a gravel bike: I'm headed over with friends and a gravel bike is currently all I have (my mountain bike was stolen, which was a gifted to me from a friend, and I stupidly didn't insure it). I've done a moderate amount of off-road over the past couple of years. I've taken my old CX bike (stolen at the same time as the mtb, but this was insured) both to Ashton Court in Bristol and on some of the blue trails up on Ben Nevis. We will probably also go off on some of the gravel routes as well, but they will also want to do some of the MTB trails.
