A few of us are going there for the first time at the end of the month and we're wondering if there's enough way marked stuff for two days or do we need to search further afield.  Many thanks.

Short answer is yes.... depending what you are planning to ride and what you mean by further afield.

Way marked stuff, i think you will struggle for two days.  In fact there is only the red and blue trails there which you can do in a few hours, then you are left with the downhill stuff.  Which is great, but without an uplift the pedal/push up iis boring as hell.

My suggestion is book a day with a guide, such as  https://www.fodmtb.com/guided-rides

Completely worth the money and you will get to sample some of the best hidden off piste trails available!  Alternatively depending when i may be able to help for the day.

Thanks gents.  Russ, that was what I had feared but we can't really afford a guide, thank you for your kind offer, I'll have a look at a few maps first though and see if we can identify some more riding.  I suppose an early rise on Sunday could see us at Cwmcarn.

Just thought, what kind of level are the DH tracks.  I top out at BPW Roots Manoeuvre level.

We generally ride early on Sundays (8:30 - 9am) happy to guide you around for the morning if im  available.

Map wise, its very hard to work out where the trails are as they shoot off all over the place, unless you stay by the centre.  If yo uhave access to Strava and a garmin, the easiest thing to do is pinch someones route.  I have helped a few out with this.  Basically download the GPX and upload to a garmin, then follow turn by turn.

The downhill trails are all pretty similar to BPW reds in my opinion. some can be more of a handful in the wet.  But there are no really big features, GBU being the trail with the biggest drops etc in my experience.  If you are going to do the Downhill trails then book an uplift is my advise.

Did a day's uplift there recently and it was cool for one day. Was glad we were moving on to BPW!

Uplift on the Sat, out of bounds route on the Sun would be good - I know there's plenty outside of the bike park. DrP did a post a few months back with lots of pics, that I am unable to find.

Agree with RussyH - most of the dh tracks are similar level to Root Manouevres. GBU drops are bypassable also. Theres some marked enduro tracks too that are worth riding like Y2K. I think you can buy a map in the cafe.

I've nicked quite a few of Russ's routes now (thanks 🙂 ), had an awesome day yesterday in near perfect conditions, if you are prepared to have a look at what is available in FoD then you can find some great riding. Been going there for about 5 years and still think I've only scrached the surface!

Better trails are on the Symonds Yat side. They are also more difficult to find. There is so much riding if you link the east and west sides. Local knowledge pretty much essential tho.

Just thought, what kind of level are the DH tracks.

Pretty much from beginner to moderate and even the 3 dot CAN be done on an out and out XC bike... (I wouldn't recommend it for fun reasons unless you're Nino Shurter).

If you stick to way marked you won't suddenly find yourself doing a jump or big drop... and you can move from 1 dot through ... a lot of thought has been put into making features and landings etc. visible.

Jnr has done every marked run when he was 6 on his out and out XC HT.  He didn't do them very quickly or include the all features but you can do them... then you can try again and put in some of the features you bypassed then though ... "I could have done that" ....

I find the thing to be wary of is getting comfortable with the well marked stuff and then riding somewhere natural where stuff just appears.
