As I understand it the non custom versions of the frame only come in one size.

So if you have one how tall are you?

How have you set yours up? layback posts, long stems, loop bars etc.

Just curious ......... For now 😉

Thanks in advance,

Mark

I'm 191cms, I have one of the very first Merlin Jones and use a Thomson layback post and a 90mm stem with a loop bar.

6'1" with an inline post, saddle right back on the rails. I'm expecting a replacement Eriksen layback post to arrive any day now. 90mm stem is being replaced with a 70mm. I'm still experimenting, 90mm handles ok, but I'd prefer to be a touch more upright for all day comfort.

Whilst we're asking, what position are you all running the EBB? I'm at 9 o clock from the drive side, due to toe buzz and pedal strikes at 6oc.

My girlfriend Susie trying my Jones out.

Don't be too tempted to go with a long stem, these bikes are supposed to be shorter than most, it does take a little bit of getting used to, coming from a longer top tube bike.

My steel diamond frame is the 23" TT version (which I think is the same as the current single size, at the time I bought there were 23" and 24" options ). I am 5'10 with 32" inside leg; I have a Thomson layback seatpost and have run both 90 and 100mm stems. Jeff encouraged me to try a short stem, and its great for hooning around the local woods but for long rides I prefer 100mm.

EBB - wherever it needs to be for correct singlespeed chain tension!

6ft here. The ride position and feel of the bike is quite unique. If at all interested its definately worth trying one out. Most Jones owners seem an amicable bunch, or Biff has a list of 'dealers' around the country. Where you based?

I'm just over 5ft7 with a 31.5" inside leg and I'm running a 100mm zero degree stem and a 20mm layback post.

A 100mm stem seems to go against the grain for my size, however I find anything shorter than 100mm restrictive on long rides.

My space frame has been comfotably used by my 5ft 2 (and a bit) partner with an inline sest post and 50mm stem and my 6ft 4 mate with 410 tomsom layback and 110 stem. ..both have lived riding it to bits. Im 5 11 and run a layback and 100 stem

6ft 3. I use either a 55mm stem and 760mm bars or 100mm stem and Jeff's bars depending on how the mood takes me. I think I prefer the short stem and traditional bars when it gets fast and rough, just feels like a gigantic bmx. 410mm layback Thomson post as well.

Vorlich - stop posting that pic. My spaceframe isn't coming until end of May now 😥

Gotama - I'm loving the bike. It rides beautifully, I read somewhere else, (drj0n maybe) that the more you push it, the more the bike rewards you, and I've found that to be true. A very capable machine, a bit of adjustment required compared to my other bikes. I'm still building confidence in it.

Still truss curious though. 😉

I'm sure your spaceframe will be worth the wait! Get some pics up once it arrives!

If you're using an H bar (and why wouldn't you?) then a longer stem than you're used too is better - mine is 90mm - since the H bar sweeps back and puts the hands further back than a standard bar. I found a shorter stem made it harder to load the front wheel in cornering, since my hands were in line with the steerer tube, the plus side of a shorter stem is comfort, as there is much less weight on the hands.

Not a looking down ones nose 'what's the point?' , but a genuinely curious 'what's the point?'. What sort of rider/riding would enjoy this bike, and why? Particularly the diamond frame/boring fork (i.e. cheapest one).

thegreatape. even the diamond and unicrown has fantastic geometry and designed as a rigid bike to work with jeff bars, with no compromises for boingy bits. I had the diamond and unicrown and it was brilliant, miles better than other "similar" steel bikes that i've ridden and or owned like karate monkey, one one, niner, swift etc...only sold it to upgrade to a spaceframe, which is even more Jones in its ride.

basically its a super stable, super capable, fat frontable, super versatile loony of a bike that rides way better, than any rigid bike should...it must be witchcraft

Thanks tazzy. Is it still suitable for a 5'10" larger chap (120kg large!). And does it have to use the Jones hubs?

Titanium Spaceframes are now back in stock, after 2 years!

The diamond with a normal fork has identical geometry to the Spaceframe, and the ride will be very similar.

And does it have to use the Jones hubs?

IIRC the problem is that most 135mm front hubs have rear brake spacing; the Jones (and Paul WHUB?) have front brake spacing as that's what the Jones fork needs.

I'm jones curious, anyone want to offer me a go on theirs at ssuk?
I'll leave my salsa/groovy combo as collateral.

Tazzy, what makes it so much better than a regular rigid steel frame/fork?

Jones front hub, paul whub or the new uber light goldec draco fat all play with a jeff fork beautifully..others work but shims and even maching from a 10mm to a 9mm can be needed. Yep it'll play wonderfully with folk of a larger build as a couple of jones boys I know are big units. If you are anywhere near the Midlands you are more than welcome to come for a ride with us and can try all the versions of a jones from a unicrown n diamond to a full spaceframe pimp build and everthing in between. I cam even bring a fat bike and some titanium niche for you to play on as well

That's a very kind offer, and much appreciated. I'm up in the Highlands though so possibly a little too far. If Bothy Bikes in Aviemore still do them they are close, ish.

John talk to kev, they are still super secret squirrel but I beleive they have 10 fronts ready to go. Price wise im not sure as I get a test monkey discount. They can also do a 10mm and 15mm through axle end cap and rotor shim adaptor so you can make your pimpy front fit most fatties.except daft 142 salsa or 150 rockshox fronts

142 salsa

Isn't that just the same as 142mm rear ie. 135mm hub shell with 3.5mm each side to aid location?

Also, if the Salsa hub is front brake spaced, does that mean it'll work on a Jones fork?

My red diamond up above is running the fat front, with Salsa (formula) hub from my 2014 Mukluk. No shims, no faffing.

5'8" 31 inside leg.
3d Spaceframe smaller of the two frames when you had the choice.
Fat fork, 100mm stem, layback seat post, jones bars.
The best bike I've ever ridden, it's a much better bike than I am a rider.

No - that's a WTB weirwolf 2.55 I think - a Knard won't go in.

See how dropper posts are popular at the moment - would they be of less value on a Jones due to you moving forward when standing compared to where you are when seated. Unless I'm misinterpreting what's being said above of course!

It's the easiest bike to get off the back of, so never a need for a dropper for me at least.

Borrowed a friends steel spaceframe SS with fat front for a week, Was impressed by the front end with Loop bars and spaceframe fork for tracking and holding a line in rutted singletrack ( I knew that already about the fork as i own a steel Truss fork that has been on fatbikes), But not that excited by the 29er rear, just did not match the front/ The bike would be better both 29er each end, or even better would be a Jones 29+
I thought the frame did nothing that special compared to my Karate Monkey frame at a quarter the price. infact i think the whippy Monkey is better, sorry to upset but i just do 😳 🙂

It still honked along for a Rigid bike on the local singletrack!

I've owned a couple a KM's and a couple of Jones.
As great as the KM is for not a lot of money it's not even a shadow on a jones*.

*As long as you fit one. And don't believe the shite of one size fits everyone.
Jeff's are built for people that are quite close to the same size as Jeff.

Well you would say that if you have spent a small fortune on one 😀
I do not see anyone doing/riding anything on a Jones that you can ride on a Monkey, there is a limit to a rigid bike frame thats all i`m saying 🙂

I've not seen anyone riding anything on a monkey that can't be ridden on a crossbike/grandads ride to work bike.
But see little relevance with the piont you're trying to make.
Yes you can ride a lot of stuff on a lot of bikes.
But does it feel as good when you do it repeatedly...

As you know yourself you can ride most things as fast on a rigid bike as a bimbler on a carbon wonder full susser. 8)

Thank you for all the responses to the thread ... loving the pics.

It would seem that the usual height to stem to post to bar set up doesn't necessarily fit with the usual convention.

At 6' 3ish I would guess at a layback Thomson post and either a 100 or 110mm stem but I really need to try one 🙂

Anyone contacted Jeff about non custom frames ... perhaps gauging thoughts on individual set up?

Anyone with one in East Anglia?

Diamond & Unicrown here. 5'9" - Thomson layback & 70mm stem with H bend.

Been riding it for about a month & really enjoying it. This is gong to sound strange, but it's somewhere between my old Kona Unit (before they went shit) & my old Cove Hustler. 2hr thrash in the woods yesterday & a 4hr South Downs mud slog today - both great rides & both completely different.

Was a little bit concerned that I'd miss the dropper post, but the geometry & bars just seem to get you in just the right position & the relatively short top tube is great.

At the moment I'm using 2.3 Ground/Butcher Controls on Flow/Blunt 35. I've got a Knard turning up tomorrow, but no real burning desire to try it. It's not like the current combo isn't working great.

Would really like to stick a ti Truss on it though.
