Foot Injury Before a Bike Tour

Injured/ aggravated some tendons in my ankle/ foot recently.

Both cycling and walking currently aggravate it.

I've got a bikepacking tour in Europe coming up in 4 weeks and bloody worried it's over before it's even started.

Seen a physio and podiatrist, both think functionally I'm okay, just some niggles and recommend insoles to sort it.

What do think my chances are of being injury free enough to see this through?

Has anyone had any luck with ankle support sleeves to try limit pain? I've had success with a knee brace in the past, so hoping one of these would do the same.

With foot injuries, I find cycling much easier than walking - do you have rigid soled shoes ? Get on the ibuprofen and rub volterol into the affected area. You've got 4 weeks to relieve it.

Depends what you’ve done, the history underlying what you have done, training history, current fitness and tissue capacity vs demands of the planned trip etc etc. The physio and podiatrist you’ve seen will know a lot more than people over the internet, so hopefully they have it in hand. Or foot. A reactive tendinopathy can, on some occasions, settle quite quickly and runners with various tendon issues can often get on the bike without any problems. All depends really on exactly what the injury is… fingers crossed it resolves quickly, maybe the rest before the trip will turn out to be a good thing 🙂

If you need another opinion, I know a very good Consultant Podiatric Surgeon who is also a keen cyclist, he is at private clinics in both Hereford and Manchester and this is his specialist area!

This sounds like it could be plantar fasciitis in which case good insoles (proper formed ones) will be a game changer. You'll need bigger cycling shoes to fit them in though.

Cheers guys.

I think essentially I've got an old achilles which has flaired up more than usual in my left leg and also issues with a collapsed arch on the right hand foot (and abit on the left too).

Unfortunately biking is one of the aggravating activities for it.

I haven't been over training or any more than I would usually do, so can't really put it down to that.

I've got some Scarpa approach shoes for riding which are fairly stiff and hoping some insoles in them will help out.

I do have other more bike specific shoes (Endura) but they are new and I find they irritate my already sore achilles with the hard backs.

Also got a bike fit booked in next week to check if the current fit is really causing me issues and how to improve it.

Hoping with a bit of rest, physio and the above I should be in a pain free position starting my tour.

Well at least I hope so.
