I feel bad typing this as I was reminded of a route I wanted to ride incorporating the west bank of the Findhorn from Tomatin heading northwards.
I say I feel bad as I was reminded of the route by a Facebook post from the author of the Trailmaps maps who is currently mapping the area. He was adamant that my route wouldn't go and I should just swallow my pride and take his word for it but it looks so tempting!
There appears to be good gravel up to the wee sheep buggy at Shenachie, but then a spicy wee traverse above a bend in the river on faint sheep tracks to rejoin the gravel 1km further downstream. Unless it's genuinely risking life and limb that's a 1km possible hike-a-bike I'd be willing to risk...
Anyone tried it?
(and apologies to Steve S. if he's reading this)
Take a couple of adjustable spanners with you and use the trolley?
Is apparently locked ☹️
Also wasn't actually sure I'd know how to work the thing after having humped a set of spanners up and over the Burma Road first 😂
I've ridden it in the other direction a few times but I forded the burn about the cableway so it's not what you'd call an all weather route!
Yeah, a fair weather route for next summer. Reassuring that it's fordable, I'd read waist high!
I'd plotted a route from the source to sea a few years back that I thought would be possible, I think in the area you mentioned down stream of the cable crossing, but never tried it.
It would definitely involve HaB over a big spur IIRC, but as I say no idea if it would work as I never did it.
Reassuring that it’s fordable, I’d read waist high!
I can't remember exactly where I crossed, it might have been a bit up from the cableway but definitely more like knee deep than waist deep at the time.
Actually having researched a bit more and found a random video on YouTube, I think I'd be more tempted to head south from Tomatin into the Coignafearn Forest, looks like a 30km out-and-back on some amazingly remote looking estate tracks. Just tragic that it doesn't seem to connect to any of the stuff around Loch Killin which would link with Loch Ness 360 😭
