Hi
Just wondering - if flying with an Xc bike in an Evoc bag - will I get away with getting bike and some kit into the Evoc while staying under 23 kg - and then having the rest of my racing kit for a week, in a carry on bag.
Or do I need to stump up for two bags??
I normally take the ferry so it's not an issue.
Cheers.
Recently I've been asked if there is anything in there apart from the bike and I've occasionally even had to open the bag for it to be checked. Who are you flying with though as experience varies hugely depending on airline (and sometimes even check-in location)?
With British Airways - economy plus or even business class.
Or Easyjet bike and bag option.
Easyjet, you are allowed up to 50kg but no single bag can be over 32kg. *
Assuming you book in a bag for the hold anyway.
*unless it's changed.
You'll struggle to get much in there and keep it under the 23kg mark.
Mine comes to 18kg with my road bike in, so guess you'll have around 1-2kg to play with.
No one ever looks. I fly all the time with gear in the bag. Its the weight that they check. Be under/on the weight limit that's all. Check with your carrier.
No bag can be over 32kg with any airline. It's the maximum weight baggage handlers are allowed to lift.
Anything over has to go via freight.
BA is 23kg on their website for bikes in economy and counts as your one hold luggage.
However BA at T5 Heathrow said it was 32kg and didn't really care anyway. Many have told me it's no problem going over with BA for bikes, especially Heathrow.
As posted in Spain thread, coming back at Malaga, they couldn't even weigh the bag and just decided to count it as an oversize and no problem. No one asked either way about the contents other than it's a bike.
BA also give you two bag allowance carry on, and overhead can get a fair bit in (weeks worth of clothes easily for me), plus a second bag that fits under seat can fit more. I've also got away with carrying a helmet separately or attached to my backpack I use as the second bag.
Anyway, on weight. An Evoc bag plus a Santa Cruz 5010 CC with a lot of carbon bits and some shoes and small tools, puts me borderline or over the 23kg (hard to weigh it with my weighing tools so not quite sure).
Fairly sure EasyJet you have to pay extra for the bike. I assume you have to pay for a hold bag anyway.
We got our bike bags checked on the way through the airport last Saturday.
Opened them up and had a good look what was in there.
They even opened up Mrs stus riding pack and checked what was in that.
