I've bought a Turner Flux frame in Large and transplanted most of my gear off my old XC hardtail apart from the forks which are set at 120mm. I'm 5'11"
The bars are too narrow for me at 685mm or so, with the 70mm stem & 120mm forks i'm guessing that i need at least 720mm.
Gave the bike a proper royal ragging last week and it actually felt fine on the downs ( apart from sag issues & pro-pedal on, sigh), its just that they feel too narrow
Anyways,
What bar would you recommend? I want it set up as more of an all-rounder than XC specific.
Interested in what you are using on your Turner. Please share !
PS the horizontal jump jet positioned seat is now set correctly and the flags need jet washed 🙂
This is set up very similar to my one. I also run 1x10/9. I have a pike that gets ridden between 100ish and 120mm. (120 feels spot on)Bars are chopped down bars around the 730mm mark. The stem is 70mm. Is the fork bolt through?
I can't think of much on your bike that I'd change to be honest. I like the bolt through front end but its no big deal.
Have you whipped the seatpost around to get the graphic facing the other way yet?
5'11" on a large with 120mm SID's, 90mm Thomson 4x 90mm x 0 deg. & Truvativ T40 carbon bar 700mm wide with 15 mm rise.
If I didn't have this bar I'd use an Easton Haven carbon 711mm with 15mm rise.
@martin
9mm QR Reba Teams. Really wish I'd went bolt through though.
The post is still as it is however the new saddle is level. Well spotted, the Thompson instructions show it the other way round. It's an inline post so I didn't pay much attention !
Thanks for that, how many stack spacers you using ? Above the stem or below ?
Cheers
Have you ridden it yet?
Spacers - none.
Yeah
A couple of 2 to 3 hour rides last week ( Ae & Mabie ).
Back to Ae again tomorrow then Dalbeattie Sat morning.
I've got a medium with 130-90mm Talas on the front, an 80mm(ish) Thomson and a set of Sunline 745 bars with 19mm rise and about 15mm of spacers under the stem. Love it, ride it 10x more than my 5 Spot, would have a shorter stem if I had the right size frame (i should have a large by all accounts).
I can't really gauge it against any other full suss. It's been 6 years since my last one which was a Trance. The only memories from that was excessive pedal bob and a cramped cockpit.
The only reason I've moved to a bouncer again is to regain a bit of comfort. TBH I'm finding I was much faster/agile/in control on a hardtail but I suppose that's to be expected on a new ride, hence the reason I'm turning down extra hours at work and riding at any given opportunity 😀
Are you quite stretched out on your setup?
Take it your a similar height?
I must admit that I'm impressed with the DW link. Out the saddle on a steep technical climb last week, felt almost like a hardtail.
I'm also 5'11" and have a large DW Flux. with Fox 120mm bolt through fork, 100mm stem, 640mm carbon bar, 2 x 10 XT gears. Stans wheels etc. It goes well. Stem does sound rather long I know but even with a non inline seat post its quite short. I may have monkey arms.
I cut the bars down for weaving through the trees at Thetford and Swinley. I have narrow shoulders so it works for me.
I'm 6'1 and a bit so only a couple of inches in it, the thing is I'm so used to riding bikes to small for me, bad habits and all that. I really like the DW too, I had used to have a Horst Link 5 spot and I don't think it was anywhere near as good as the DW but that might be the better shocks (F&R) on the DW. Since I've had the Flux I rarely head out on the 5spot (new DW one). Probably the best bike I've ever owned for my local terrain.
Yes there will be some hair raising tight gaps on my local trails when I go wider !
the thing is I'm so used to riding bikes to small for me
Snap.
Previous mindset of smaller bike - more chuckable / flickable if you know what I mean, even though my back would suggest otherwise at the time
I'm 6' and ride a large Flux with 120 float bolt throughs. I use a 100mm stem and Easton monkeylites at 635mm which I like cos I don't just do trail centres and want the ability to go long
er without feeling like an ape.
I love the bike but it does feel short on tt and high at the front. Grip climbing is nuts though I have to make a much more conscious effort to shift weight forward and the quick steering shows with quite a lot of bar wagging though some of that might be down to lack of skill.
Stu - I suppose its stretched compared to some, my 6'1" mate rides a similar set up to me.
I also have two other bikes with 90mm stems & one has a longer eff TT & the other shorter but it works for me.
Arrrgghhh....
I've got to STOP looking at threads with Turner Flux in the title as it just makes me want one (again). I used to have a HL one which I stupidly sold to fund a more svelte like racing machine. I do miss it and can see me getting one again when the funds allow.
its a great all rounder which can be built quite light too. I personally think its the ideal tool for 80% xc/trail riding. great allday bike too.
