Dot 5.1 is best

or 4 will work... but no mixing 😀

5.1 has a higher boiling point so better for the likes of heavy extended braking. Dot 4 has a lower boiling point and apparently gives alighter feel to the brake lever - I've ridden with Dot 5.1 and Dot 4 and couldn't feel any difference at the lever...I think Dot 5.1 is m,ore hydroscopic (I think) but it works better for longer once contaminated (not with water in the system, just once the fluid is needing changed/serviced - the 5.1 fluid will continue to work more consistently than 4.

DOT 4 and 5.1 can be safely mixed. You will see no diffrerence by using 5.1 except your wallet will get lighter more quickly.

Helpfully DOT 5 is a totally different type of fluid and must not be mixed with anything other than more DOT 5

What DickBarton said, ...er but yeah you can mix 4 and 5.1... er but why would you. 😀

5 is silicon based...

5.1 is away of not having synthetic fluid and a fluid that doesn't absorb moisture as much as 4. performs better for longer without needing to bleed the bloody things 😀
