Hi,

I know it can be difficult as people usually buy a set of brakes with discs coming from the same brand, but in case some of you upgraded to better discs: are some floating rotors better in terms of longevity and performances?

Thanks

Have got two sets of Superstar's finest with Juicys and Elixirs and they are definitely an improvement over the std rotors

They're slightly heavier than the std rotors but most importantly for me they are smooth and above all silent. I don't know whether the floating action compensates for irregularities in the caliper/rotor alignment or something but they feel really good.

Just pull the lever and slow down no fuss no drama

I had superstar floating rotors and it always felt like the headset was loose as you could hold the brake and feel the rotor move. went back to weight weenie rotors without the floating malarkey and hey presto issue gone!

Hope floaters seem to work well though

Yes Hope discs look great and I've heard mostly good feedbacks on those, but they are not compatible with my brakes unfortunately...

Still, I guess floating rotors from others brands might be very good though, I just want to pick a good one based on what people have experienced.

Why are they not compatible?

Why are they not compatible?

I've seen a guy (I think on MTBR forum) that tried this combination and had basically to file the caliper because the screws joining the two parts of the rotor where hitting the caliper 😯

I was initially planning to go for the Avid Clean Sweep X Brake Disc but it exists in 185mm instead of the traditional 180mm standard; so I guess it is not compatible either 🙄 ...

Just happened to have a Superstar floating rotor'd bike in yesterday, and had to file back the Shimano Deore caliper body to clear the rivets too.

I've had to file a fair bit of metal away from my fork post mounts to get my hope floating rotor to fit. Not too fussed.

Err, you've filed away a whole load of structural metal holding your brake callipers on? Are you sure that's a wise plan?

Had hope ones for ages outlasted most other rotors I have had. Still straight after a lot of abuse.

growmac. Possibly not wise, but its my choice and my mate has had to do the same with Fox forks, so seems a common problem. With non floating rotors I had literally 1/2mm max clearance. With floating Hope rotor, rotor wouldnt turn at all. There looked like lots of material on post mount, so took a file to it. S'pose I ought to paint it, but bike get a beating and bruised all the time 🙂

Hayes Prime Expert.
I don't know which floating rotors would fit in the Hayes calipers as Hayes unfortunately stopped producing their floating rotors...

I see that some of you used the "file trick". However this makes me wonder how the thing would look like after using the file.

Do you have to remove a lot of metal to fit the rotor in (if so, one might be worried about the reliability of this "custom" setting).

My hopes fell apart, and to be fair to Hope they replaced them quickly, with another set that fell apart. There was no performance advantage (*) and they weren't even very light. But, they did look lovely.

(* won't rule out that there might have been some benefit under prolonged braking, but I've never had a brake that couldn't cope with that as standard... Maybe if you've got one that cooks easily though)

Hope floaters foul on On-One carbon forks also. Had to "fettle" some old Juicy's once too, to get some Hope floaters to work. I run Avid G3CS these days, as they just seem to work well.

The loose feeling is the rivets working loose. Hope said one way to stop it is to press the rivets. I did it on a fly press at work & it was fine afterwards.

The SS ones looked about the ssme weight as std.
I guess if I ever went beyond Stainburn or Gisburn I might notice a difference but what I like most though would be to pimp the bike up even more in the SS range of colours (techno green in my case).

Love my Hope Floaters though the buttons joining the spider to the braking ring is causing a bit of wear and you can rock the bike a bit with the brake on but its all good.

Had one rear spider collapse on a descent to Kinloch Hourn, quite exciting at the time but Hope replaced it FOC quickly.

Reading your comments, I start to be a bit skeptical about the benefits of having a floating rotor. I mean, I'm not especially ethusiast to have rotor starting to feel loose because of the rivets in a downhill section.

I may stick to a one piece rotor but are floating rotors really less durable than standard ones then?

I put a 140mm Hope floater on the rear with an XTR M965 calliper with original M07 organic pads and it works fine, all the time for the last 2.8 years.
Originally fitted for weight saving, but now see the KCNC is even lighter...so next time...
