I'm looking for some flat pedals for the Mrs. She has been riding her mountain bike for 6 months and has done pretty well but would like more grip to feel more confident. I'll get her a pair of shoes like some five tens but what pedals should I get her? She doesn't want big pins that will cut her shins/calf (like my DMR Vaults). I've been on CRC and Wiggle but all the pedals look like they have pins that will scare her (sometimes its hard to tell from the pics), I know she will have to sacrifice some grip, but some new pedals should be better than the ones that came on her bike.
Anyone got some suggestions?
You can usually remove the pins with an allen key
I put some Nylon Nukeproofs on my other halfs bike, she was a bit worried about the pins but says her feet are so well planted that it doesn't bother her anymore. Plus they are cheap enough to perhaps buy and try and not suffer too much of a hit to the wallet.
Edit: Seems they have gone up in price since I got them

Got some for my Mrs - not as good grip but not as scary...
To be honest, just hitting your leg on a metal pedal even without pins hurts like mad. The pins help to keep your feet planted and mean you are less likely to do this. I wouldn't say vaults are that scary pins, unless you have the bigger terror set fitted.
If she is really worried about the pins then you should get a set of shin pads for her. Back in the day, shin pads were considered essential for flat riders but you hardly see them now and slipping a foot with good pedals and shoes is quite rare.
Scary pins are what keep your feet on the pedals. The Saints come with washers. Remove the washers and you have more pin poking out, easily allowing you to adjust the grip and feel.
The Saints that I bought were heavy and the bearings were shite though.
I bought a pair of the Superstar plastic ones for the girlfriend (same ones as the Nukeproof plastic flats). She loves them and says the pins don't cause her any grief.
My lad has those plastic platform pedals on his bike and he seems to do ok, he's only 6 though!!
Mrs Foo likes these the fat pins are not sharp shin rippers flat pedals
My wife had some pinless pedals, and was always slipping off and bashing her shins.
Since getting some decent pinned pedals, (Wellgo MG) she has had no problems.
Worth thinking bout why the pins are there.
Superstar Components' version of the plastic Nukeproof Electron are only £25. I have both and are ok although I would like slightly longer pins
Yeah the el plastique feom superstar. I got mine for 15 quid woth a discount a while ago. I would also like slightly longer pins
Get some decent pedals and shin pads?
Straitlines?
I remember a chef once telling me that people don't cut themselves on sharp knives. I think the same wisdom applies here.
Unfortunately the scary pins are what stop you slipping off the pedals!

Straitlines?
OF all the flat pedal injuries I've seen, the ones from Straitlines are invariably the worst, they have murderous pins on them. I have the scars to prove it. 🙂
You can swap pins on Vaults form long to short - although they have a huge platform, possibly overkill for a smaller shoe size.

Yeah. I'm with you
You can get ones with the moulded pins for less than a tenner - http://r.ebay.com/yAZauw
worth trying for that price?

Very surprised! Soljams on my ss however caused blood to flow. 😐
Wellgo C162 CNC Sealed bearing Platform Pedals are very good smaller in size and not too aggressive in pin department. Merlin stock them.
Thinking about this some more, FiveTens are really grippy! If she's been riding flats with 'moulded' pins without much trouble then her foot technique should be decent and a much grippier shoe will make a big difference. Last summer I rode a hire bike with cheap moulded flats on ridiculously rocky trails in Mallorca, wearing Converse trainers and didn't lose my feet, though I wasn't going at full tilt. So I'd change the shoes, let her confidence build and then see if she wants proper flats (with scary but effective pins).
I think the fatter hex head pins have the most grip vs injury potential. The skinny pins like on Holzfellers look like real shin rippers...
Another vote for plastic pedals here - not all are created equal though. Some with square-ish studs offer burger all grip - I use Odyssey Twisted PCs and they're fine with Converse or Shimano AM41s.
I do have a pair of brand new black plastic Shadow Conspiracy Rant pedals for sale at the mo on a well-known auction site 😉 - £7.99 posted. Have rounded profile studs so look like they'd offer reasonable grip - still in their original packaging though so I haven't tried them (came with a complete BMX bike I recently bought).
As tootallpaul says, the pins are there for a reason. Personally I use cheap Wellgo V8 copies on the DH bike as I only have small feet - the ones with replaceable pins though as painted metal pedals with moulded pins are next to useless especially in the wet.

Not from slipping off them - they grip brilliantly - just crashes, and..er...a flip flop incident that was possibly my own fault.
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I will have a look at them and also some shin pads.
