Katie and I are going to have a proper try with flat pedals. Are shoes which you *can* attach cleats to compromised for flat pedal use?
Don't think you'd want to even if they did exist... clipless shoes have super stiff soles and are normally quite heavy. The benefits of flat shoes are that you can feel the pedal more and a bit of give is good to get more grip. If you're having a proper go... then I suggest you do just that and buy some proper flat shoes!
Second hand off ebay or in the sale would be my advise!

Ok - that makes sense. If we don't get on with flats on the mtbs can always use on city bikes so they'll get use.

I've got AM5s. They didn't come with a plate to cover the cleat. They weren't very good on the short hop I did on my flats I'm afraid.
As above, you'll end up compromising one of the methods. You need two pairs of shoes I'm afraid.
The pair that have been delivered from CRC today dont, the Scott FR10 clip have it but needs to be pulled out.

They look ideal. I have some. They aren't. I like everything about them except the sole just isn't very grippy and that rules them out.
If it's cheap you want then any sort of tennis/skate shoes from somewhere like sports direct will do.
Before I bought my Teva links (which are ace, but discontinued) I had some Slazenger shell toe knock offs from sportsdirect that cost a tenner. They were great, used them for about 3 years until the pins tore the sole apart.
Tevas have lasted longer, but less feel on the pedals and take weeks to dry out if they get properly wet. When they do die I'll probably go back to cheap trainers.

These would do the job nicely. The only advantage of the old shell toe version was a bit more protection.
Are the AM7s noticeably worse than the AM41s then? I use a pair of them with SS Nanos and have never had a problem with grip.
