Hiya,
My 5ten freeriders are coming to the end of their life.
Whilst the grip has been great as has the durability of the uppers I've noticed a burning feel in the ball of my feet where the axle of my pedal is.
I run dmr vaults on my bikes, which are quite concave. I've tried insoles, which have helped a bit. I have a theory that the shoe mid sole is a bit too flexy.
Anyone got any recommendations for my next shoes? Thinking about Ride concepts Helions, but no experience...
Haven't you noticed the huge FiveTen sale on Evans? Get on it.
Good psa.
I suppose my point is, my 5ten freeriders make the balls of my feet burn on longer rides, so was wondering if anyone has an alternative they'd recommend.
Specialized Roost 2FO.
They are genuinely as grippy as the ‘proper’ 510 Stealth rubber, but the soles don’t fall apart as much, and the uppers last better too.
I was an absolute die hard 510 flat rider but I only have Specialized shoes now.
What HobNob said.
I'll just also add that the soles on the 2FOs are also stiffer than any of my fivetens.
Having got used to that i now find my fivetens really uncomfortable with the way they bend around the pedal.
They're also lighter and dry quicker.
Thanks Hobnob, thanks Stu. Will check them out.
2FO and Ride Concepts hellions here.
the specialized are nowhere near as stiff as the RC and the RC build quality leagues ahead of specialized.
the RC also have similar if slightly less grip, but more than sufficient.
I'd only recommend the RC's.
Word of caution there. 2FO Roosts aren’t very stiff, 2FO DH are the stiffer option (I have both). Both are good though
Were the Freeriders always sore or could it just be the sole crumbling as they get to the end of their life?
Good Intel. RC Helions available on discount.
TBH yes they always made my feet tired. Fine up until about 10 miles, but after that the burning sensation starts.
I've tried different socks, tightening laces, loosening laces.
It has never been enough to seriously bother me, but now I'm replacing, I'd prefer a more supportive shoe.
I have very flat feet and hypermobile joints, so there's quite a lot going on in the mix. 😉
I bought some RC Hellions from Tredz for less than £50 a couple of weeks ago- really good. Grippier than the FiveTen Pro Prime Blues I've been using through the summer. They look a bit weird, mind- the reinforced toe box gives strong orthopaedic shoe energy.
Freerider has thin and flexible soles comparing to other five tens. I'd try Freerider Pro or even Impact pro if you want to stay with 5.10. I have used all three and they should give you very noticeably improvements.
My feet can't tolerate Freerider Elements anymore, the sole is way to thin even with thick insoles.
I also own the other extreme, old Impact Pros (same as the Sam Hill version) that are so thick and heavy your feet are completely numbed. They weight a ton, fill up like a skip and suck up every drop of moisture from a trail!
Pretty happy in Etnies Culvert Mids. They have a stiff sole, a shade less than impacts, but aren't as wide fitting as 5 tens, which works for me but might not for you!
