Sure I saw a thread about this the other week but can’t find it so apologies if it’s been covered!
Got a very nearly dead pair of specialized 2fo shoes that I really like. Bought a 2fo 2.0 shoe last year but it’s not as good as the first edition. So leads to the what next question?! Had fiveten freeriders before and they are crazy grippy but take a ridiculous amount of time to dry.
Anyone have any experience of giro jacket 2 or any of the ride concepts shoes? Or any other suggestions?

Giro jacket 2 are extremely cheap feeling and very flimsy, the sole is also very flat so they don’t grip like Fiveten shoes.

Ride concepts are quite small fitting, I wear a UK 12 and they say that’s an EU46 rather than EU47 like everyone else. Their shoes would be closer to fivetens although I found my foot still moved around on the pedal.

Five Ten Impact Pros are my favourite. Dry much faster than free riders, usual Fiveten grip and comfy / spacious.

The Freerider pro dries very well.

Grip is good & it’s not as big and clumpy as the impact.

Significantly more grip than the 2FO.

I've got a pair of Northwave Clans that really work for me - nice shape toe box (felt like more space than the 2FO 1.0 in the same size) and the grip feels really good albeit a bit less sticky than 5.10. I use them bikepacking so they are often wet and they drain well/dry out fairly quickly.

I switched from Freeriders to ION Scrub AMP. Great shoes, I'm more than happy.

I'd say it depends on what you value the most and what's your use case.
I use both a 2 years old pair of Shimano GR7s and 8 months old Five Ten Sam Hills, always on Nukeproof Horizons.
The GR7 are grippy enough on 90% or more of situations, very light, dry quickly and in usual Shimano fashion extremely well made and durable. The Impacts Sam Hill have more grip for those 10% really bonkers situations, more protection, the very stiff sole is less fatiguing on very long days or very hard descends and are better for hiking on really (I mean really) rough terrain. I'm using the GR7s for bikepacking and lighter trail riding days and the Sam Hills for shuttles or winch and plummet days.

All things considered, if actual full on DH tracks weren't in the plans, I'd be happy with only the GR7s

I’m more drawn to the skate style looking shoes than most of the others. Vain I know but I just don’t like the look of a lot of the others. The freerider slx is advertised as being quicker drying. Had a freerider pro in the past and it was grippy. Although sometimes too grippy if your foot was in the wrong place on the pedal. The 2fos while not having as much all out grip have decent stiffness and enough grip to get by

I think I’ve got a set of the old 2FO that I don’t get on with size wise, what size are you?

Pretty happy with my ION Scrub AMPs, only done a few rides on them though. My feet are too bulky for Northwave Clans. There's a comparison video on YouTube.

I love my Giro Jackets. They're a much better 'shoe' than a five ten. As in, they feel well built and comfortable with no weird lumps or bumps. They don't have the mega grip but I actually prefer that sometimes. Impacts get saved for uplifts and DH days, Jackets for jump bike and everything else.

Had five tens for years and currently on a set of freerider pros. I don’t think they’re any quicker to dry out than any of the others and really don’t understand why they need to be so thick around the heel compared to my fellas non five ten spd shoes which pretty much dried overnight and mine caused wet socks almost everyday this week. I’m tempted to pick up a pair of something else when we’re away in the van and there’s a risk of soaking.

I scored some 5:10 trail cross boots from a mate who ordered a size too large.
They're very, very good. Fit like a glove & dry pretty quick.
Tried Giro Riddance mid, but they tore really easily & weren't that grippy.

Think I’m keen to move away from the 2fo, ion and ride concepts are looking the favourites so far. I know free riders would have all the grip. Ah I hate decisions!
Giro jackets Look the best with the grey/gum sole colour. Yes I’m vain!

Let's face it , if you are moving from first generation 2FO shoes then even a wet bar of soap will have more grip so just go for whatever looks best . five ten are still the benchmark and the Freerider Pro is IMO the best shoe that they make . It also dries way quicker than regular freeriders .

Honestly, I think that 5:10s are unbeatable. If I’m away biking for a few wet days in a row, I take both my Freeriders and my old Sam Hills and just wear them on alternate days.

The Ion shoes are good. Compared to 5:10 Freeriders, the sole is stiffer but grip not quite as good (still fine though)

With great grip comes compromise in durability - the 5:10s were falling apart in two years, but the Ions are still going strong after four.

Hi,

A bit of thread resurrection.

Thinking about going back to basics and maybe finally master some skills (bunny hops, wheelies and so on) and trying to go with flat pedals/shoes combo for that sake.

I get it, FiveTen looks to be go-to brand/model, but I do not want to splash as yet that much.

Hence question about On-One flats, or any other with decent grip on a budget. Probably not as good as benchmark but decent...

Cheers!
I.

Be good to hear on how the on one shoes compare to skate shoes as well as how they compare to 510s.

Ivan, keep your eyes on ebay and the likes for hardly used flat shoes, folks that try flats and it's not for them.

Ta!

I'm doing so. Currently not too many in my size though...

Is that true that Five10s coming a tad on the smallish side size wise?

Seen some notes about it here and there...

Cheers!

Not really sure tbh, as I always go up a size for sealskinz/warm socks.

the vaude shoes are a bit cheaper than 5-10 and grippy as hell. Fairly impressed, no idea on longevity though

The Vaude shoes are my current favourites. Grippier than the Ion (and more comfy for me) with a better closing system. Lasting really well. I´ve got the Moab shoes plus the higher boots, both are really good. Nothing is grippier than 5:10 but the vaude are close enough for me plus they are lasting so much better than any of the many styles of 5:10 I´ve tried.

For just trying them and seeing if you can bunny etc, I would personally just use whatever shoes I´ve got. I´ve ridden plenty with just normal shoes, either to the pub (which is singletrack for me) or because I´ve forgotten my shoes. My decathalon walking shoes are even pretty good for normal riding. I´ve done 1000m+ descents in a set of loafers which I wrapped in an innertube and taped over, it was amazingly good! Really it´s fast, rocky stuff where you need the best grip you can get. Bunny, wheelie etc are slower speed and rely on technique more than grip.

For pedals, there are always good deals on the websites. Don´t go plastic unless they have metal pins. Any of them are good enough for a bit of riding to see if you can master basic skills.

Sane call.

Funnily enough I do not believe I have any trainer type shoes kicking around xD

So might just buy something proper second hand.

Who knows, might be I will fall in love with flats...

Cheers!

Depends which ones, Freeriders EPS are a size down. Normal Freeriders probably true to size still, dunno about Freerider Pros.

Impact Pro maybe half size down, or true to size? Can't remember but I borrowed a friend's for a ride and loved them. Putting a pair on my Xmas list.

I´ve done 1000m+ descents in a set of loafers which I wrapped in an innertube and taped over, it was amazingly good!

I knew there was a reason I'd kept all those 26in inner tubes!

Shimano GR7 are my current favourite for trail riding though, they're just really well designed and the sole is grippy enough. Proving more durable than Five Tens too, I'd say.

Was lucky to get them for £30 in that Evans sale last year.

I'm just leaping in to say that when people say "X shoes are more durable than Five Tens" it might be relevant to mention to what Five Ten model you are comparing to.
I kept hearing that Five Tens were not durable, but I'm 10 months into a pair of Impact Sam Hills, 3 rides per week, and to my surprise they're looking really fresh, holding much better then my GR7s were at the same mileage

My on ones are almost as grippy as my old etnie skate boots with a longer lasting sole.
