Hi allÂ
Â
The paint on my bike frame has started to flake in a few places. The frame is aluminium and as I understand it apart from the aesthetics the frame itself should not be affected.
Â
Is that correct ie. the bike is still safe to ride ?Â
Â
Hope these images show in the post, if not I will just add the URLs.Â

It'll be grand for a good while yet.
Thanks for response, thought as much but wanted to check.

Can't get images to display properly but it does say I don't have permission to attach files which may or may not be the issue.Â

For anyone else (i.postimg.cc/yY54sQ2Z/IMG-9928.jpg & i.postimg.cc/qv3fRcdZ/IMG-9930.jpg) - just stick "https://" in front.
It'll be fine.
Aluminum is difficult to paint as paint doesn't bond with it very well, and aluminium oxide is hard and doesn't flake off like iron oxide so creeps under paintwork. So if you do decide to cover it up, give the whole frame a thorough rub with ~400 grit wet and dry to key the good paint and sand back the paint arroud the flaked bits to get back to solid paint and smooth any edges where it's flaking off. Then paint it all in etch primer before you topcoat it.
Â
I can't see the images, but if you have caught it early and do what tinas says, then it should be ok again. Also check that all drain holes are unblocked and that moisture/muck is not getting trapped.
Thanks for the responses .
I can't see the images, but if you have caught it early and do what tinas says
Yeah there is quite a fair bit of paint already flaked off to be honest but as mentioned I can't see any pitting etc. just oxidization.Â
Â
At some stage I am thinking of getting it powder coated but just wanted to be sure it is safe to cycle at the moment. There is actually quite a bit of flaked paint on the underside of the frame that has been there for a long time but it was the downtube where it seems to be just getting worse.Â
Â
I couldn't get the images to display here but if you use these and just put "https://" in front of them they do work -Â

You have to paste the path without the https://, otherwise STW treats it like a hyperlink, then go back and type in https:// (it also works if you just miss the h off the front and type that in).
Are you the original owner, OP?

No but I bought it about 5 years ago off a guy who had barely used it. I have used it (a lot) and it's been a great bike.Â
I would be reluctant to get rid off it to be honest and am thinking of getting it powder coated at some stage assuming the frame is sound.Â
Seems to be but I am not an expert.Â

Thanks very much 🙂Â
OK, was just checking as there may be a hope of warranty from past experience of similar but unf. not if it was bought S/H.Â
