[Closed] Fixing a toilet - buying spares?

I'm trying and failing to fix a toilet at home, it's causing hammering in the pipework whilst refilling the cistern so rather than faffing around trying to replace the diaphragm in the valve I figure I might as well just replace the valve itself - great, buy new valve from screwfix and go to fit...

New valve needs flush valve removing to get it in place, I take that off finding that the close coupling is in a pretty manky state so I need to replace that too (v. badly rusted). The new valve is about 1/2" shorter in the outlet thread so the water pipe wont reach and the new coupling is too big and the wingnuts wont clear the toilet...

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should go for spares? its a 1hr round trip to B&Q/screwfix and I'm fed up of the to and fro! Have reluctantly called a plumber to make sure it's sorted before Christmas but I'm really frustrated. If I could have just sourced the right bits somewhere it would have made the job much more straight forward rather than taking whatever limited aftermarket parts they have at B&Q!

I work for a toilet valve manufacturer. DIY outlets are probably your best bet to find spares outside of trade.

Rubbish! Oh well I guess I'm better just getting the plumber in then, feels like I've exhausted the local DIY shop route.

Surely there's a plumber's merchant a bit closer than the B&Q? They are always better as you can have a quick chat about the issue and make sure you getting exactly the right parts.

Just ring Dynorod and be done with it...£100 f*****n quid twice in two years on my toilets.

My theory is that toilet mechanisms are a metaphor for the decline of the West. Once you used to be able to get a toilet that fulfilled its primary function indefinitely, for a reasonable price. Now, in return for having a button flush, they last about 18 months. If you want a reliable toilet you probably pay a fortune (comparatively).

I hate my toilets.

Yak, I guess I could have a look in the merchants, they're no closer though (I'm just outside Aberdeen). bainbrge - I feel your pain - it's not just the money though, it's the hassle of organising someone to come in too 🙁

Dynorod to be fair were pretty good - turned up when they said they would (booked over internet). Took him 30mins to fix both toilets, including the new flush bits (technical term).

As I said, £100 per visit, but given I've got a toddler, a knackered wife, a more than full time job, and loads of family arriving for Christmas - I just shouted TAKE MY MONEY!

You can usually affect a temporary fix for water-hammer simply by adjusting the water pressure. Either by adjusting the main water tap for the whole house or IF you have a water tap nearer to the cistern by adjusting that.

It's a bit of a hit-and-miss affair as you may need to increase (if you can) or decrease the pressure by opening or closing the tap.

Then you can wait for the plumber to arrive and fix it permanently 8)

The flow, not the pressure.
