...I can not get the bloody SRAM links to fully close and can't remember how I did it that last time. Any pointers?!

Clip it together o the upper half of the chain and just squeeze the back brake and stand on the pedal

Assume you mean quick links? Pull rear brake and put the link to the front of the cassette and push the crank.

Roll the powerlink to the upper side of the chain, throw the crank round and slam on the back brake.

Try putting the link in the upper run of chain, putting the back brake on and standing on the pedal 😉
