I didn't think that it could be done but this seems to be able to do it:

www.velotechservices.co.uk/shop/vclose2.asp?prd=124101&cat=7410001938

has anyone got any experiences of these bearings?

Thanks,

Matt

Is that really BB30 or is it just the Hope/Raceface/e13-type 30mm axle?

Don't know mate. I'm so confused but the bearings seem to be shaped to fit into a bb86.5, 24mm diameter yet still accept an axle with a 30mm diameter. Too confusing and ultimately I'll check with my bike shop. Just wondering if anyone has any experience of these bearings but I push ahead.

Hope do PF41 (outside diameter) for 30mm axles.

No centre tube though, just cups & bearings.

BB30 uses a 42mm bearing directly press-fit into the BB shell (68mm wide) and secured with a cir-clip. BB86/92 shells are 41mm internal diameter x 86.5/92mm wide - uses a smaller diameter bearing but are wider-spaced - expect it's a roller bearing to better take the load. As with BB30, following installation instructions (Loctite?) and make efforts to prevent water-ingress into the BB shell (mudguard) - bearings running immersed in water shortens their life considerably. I should add a BB30 crank won't fit at BB86 shell due to the shorter 68mm spindle - you need crank with a longer spindle like BB386 or Rotor BSA30 to fit.

Cheers for this. I really didn't know about the Hope kit. I want to run my Cannondale Hollowgram Si cranks through a Trek 86.5mm bottom bracket shell. So, in theory the 30mm diameter axle of the Cannondale cranks should fit in the shell with either the Hope or the other bearing adaptor kit. I just need to determine the right length of axle.

Anyone out there want to hazard a guess, or help me determine, what length spindle I would need to run a single ring cannondale Hollowgram Si crank through a BB86.5mm wide BB?!

Thanks,

Matt

A BB86 shell is too wide for your Hollowgram cranks as they have a 68mm spindle and the BB shell is 86mm

The 30mm axle comes in lots of sizes. So in theory, if they accept the 30mm diameter then the 109mm spindle will be too short but maybe the 120mm one or even the 131mm, or even the 137mm wide spindle should do it! That sounds possible. as long as I have close to 50mm of axle hanging out either side to attach the Si cranks then it should work.

....the only problem then is you'll end up with a 60mm chainline (should be 45mm) and a Q facor of about 220mm.So as long as you only use the 11t throw away the front mech and don't mind pedaling like John Wayne it'll be perfect.

I do mind that...

My powers will fail with this so my LBS will have to help I think. It seems possible though but beyond my powers.

It does'nt have to do with powers or LBS help...it's more the fact that it's not physically possible to make it work.

I'm probably going to reveal my ineptitude with regards to bike maintenance but why not? The spindle on my current Cannondale Fsi is 137mm with a 83mm BB shell. I know that the whole chainset has been shifted 6mm across to accommodate the Ai lacing of the rear wheel. I'm not sure I'll right it off as an idea so completely yet. Thanks to Dovebiker though. I'll see but like I'm said I'm now expert-that's why I posted.
