Just bought an etap rear wifi mech to fit to my canyon ultimate. Should be the easiest thing in the world to fit however when I bolt it on and move to largest cog (When setting it up without chain) the lower jockey is hitting the spokes despite the top jockey being aligned perfectly.ie the cage doesn't hang vertically.
If you put tension on the mech simulating a chain being attached the lower jockey just about clears the spokes, by a mm or so. I wouldn't be happy riding it like this, and if my chain snapped I would undoubtedly write off a 500 quid mech and my rear wheel.
I've set up numerous mechanical mechs and never had an issue, and I don't think the hanger is bent..certainly doesn't look it, and mechanical gears worked on it fine.
What am I doing wrong?
Don't have a pic hosting account or I'd add a photo.
Ta
B tension screw need adjusting?
Don't think so tom. Screwed it all way in and it's not made much of a difference. I'm beginning to think the hanger may be bent, which will be a pain in the ass, however not sure how to check. I'd buy a new one but I'd need to get it in from Germany.
Your LBS can do this for £10-15 using an alignment tool or buy the tool for £30. Sometimes just replacing the hanger isn't enough if the damage was due to a crash - you still need to check alignment - I've seen new bikes with bent / twisted gear hangers.
Obvious and probably irrelevant Q but the rear wheel is definitely sat in the dropouts properly? Assuming not bolt-thru I guess.
I set up a WiFli eTap groupset, so if *I* can do it... 😉
Yep, rear wheel in correctly, definitely checked!
Is the cage definitely meant to hang at 90 degrees to the floor or is there meant to be an angle? If it is then the rear mech hanger is definitely goosed, despite looking straight to the eye.
Next question is if that's the case is there a company that do canyone rear hangers other than canyon?
I’ve recently put wifli on my old CR6/4 - it was relatively simple. Depending upon which block you’re using you need to set b-tension for either bottom or top.
If your hanger is borked then BETD make hangers for many frames or try derailleurhangerstore

I think Wheels Manufacturing do some mech hangers, fairly sure I got one made by them for a bike once. Whether they do Canyon ones, I have no idea.
Rear mech alignment is definitely vertical and in-line front to back - whilst the frame is carbon, the mech hanger is almost certainly a separate aluminium piece as they are designed to be 'sacrificial' to prevent catastrophic damage to the frame in the event of a crash. First option would be to take it to your LBS for them to check / see if they can realign it and get a spare if needed. Canyon hanger spares
Right, popped along to evans cycles (my usual lbs were full) For them to check and the rear hanger was horribly bent. They straightened it but i got it back and it would still shift into the wheel without a chain, and with a chain fitted the shifting is awful..worse than with badly adjusted cables. It moves nicely between some ratios but not others, which I assume is a sure sign of a borked hanger given sticky cables isn't an issue on etap.
I'm kinda annoyed that I had assumed the fact my ultegra mechanical gears were never great because they were mechanical..and cables were playing up etc. Could have saved myself a grand by discovering it was in fact the hanger all along. Hey ho..
Im intrigued by this...I fitted a new WiFli eTap groupset a few days ago, having previously had an Ultegra groupset, and had EXACTLY the same issue with the rear mech. No matter what I tried it wouldn't move out of the rear wheel....until I put the chain on, this seemed to 'bring' the mech to the correct alignment. the mech hangar is fine, so quite what else the problem might be I don't know....of course if the chain snapped I'd hate to think what the outcome would be...
Smog..did you get it sorted? I went out today and shifting was fine, but like you if the chain snapped I'd be utterly screwed as the mech would disentigrate into the rear wheel. Surely it's not meant to be like that without a chain fitted.if it is it's a fairly big design flaw!
tpbiker I've gone on faith that Srams own video above tells us what the correct way is to install it. It certainly does things the opposite way round to how I would normally do it...it has the chain in place for starters. Presumably the low stop, once correctly set, will stop the mech from ploughing into the rear wheel if the chain snaps?
My limit are set but if my chain snapped it would still go onto the spokes on the biggest sprocket. It won't quite hit if my chain slips off the inside, but it's close
Hanger alignment not a design flaw, had exactly the same on mine when I first set it up.
Switched to a brand new hanger and it was still out, further check with an alignment tool confirmed new hangers aren't always perfect.
Little tweak and all is good.
I wouldn't risk ploughing a £450 derailleur into your spokes for the sake of 10 minutes and the price of an alignment tool!
