For a first time, whites or skyline?
Whites first, tea and cake, then shortened skyline
Don't make the fatal error of ordering "lunch" at the dropoff between sessions. Your overloaded stomach will puke on the following climb.
Or W2 (Whytes and Wall)
Whites, then skyline (short version)
Great day out, and I can't wait to get out there again soon.
Dropoff Cafe, have the Welsh Rarebit. If Luffy's lot have run out, you are allowed to kill him. It's the law! 😉
A few top tips from my first trip to afan a few weeks back:
- if camping don't tell your other 3 mates how great your 6 man tent is for the whole journey only to find out when attempting to pitch in the rain as its going dark that you haven't brought the tent poles! Not the best way to start.
- if you do forget your tent poles then tesco in port talbot is luckily open until 10pm on a sat night and sells 2 and 3 man tents.
- we squeezed in a whytes, the wall and 2 of us managed a whytes climb to the shortcut on to skyline for the jet lag descent which was well worth the extra pain to finish on.
- can only comment on 2nd hand opinions but skyline is a tick in a box apparently and not quite up to the standard of whytes and the wall. The wall has a lot of boring fireroad climbing but the way down makes up for that. Whytes was brilliant up and down.
Skyline is like twice as long as Whites. Whites is possibly my favourite trail ever. Ever.
Go for Whites, a small lunch (beware, portions are massive) and then July (which is the short Skyline taking in all the good bits). Or best of all, park at Afan and do W2 with a lunch stop at Glyncorrwg (Drop-off cafe). You get Whites and The Wall that way and they're ace.
Afternoon from 2pm so whats it gonna be, ile have been climbing pylons all morning so one route only!
I went for the first time last week. Did the wall in the morning then drove up to the drop off cafe had lunch (huge huge lunch)and then did whites in the avo. The whites climb is arduous but the down was worth it. All in all a very good days riding not at all difficult or technical but speed makes it real fun.

The short or medium version of Skyline is good but I think the long version feels less worthwhile. They need to put in at least one more long section of good singletrack.
W2
Doing W2 on Sunday see you there
