This morning I decided to go for a ride I got on my bike a couple of weeks ago to do the ½ mile commute to work so after 2 weeks I felt ready to venture further I planned a route from home which should have taken me briefly onto Dartmoor, but as I had gotten sweaty and the wind was blowing cold up there I shortened the route and by that time I was pretty knackered as it was all uphill. The second half was great all downhill more or less.

A few lessons learnt, glasses needed and keep my mouth closed through puddles. Prepare a little better for dartmoor I did have layers but a waterproof might have helped a wet backside.

So I did 5.6 miles in 1hr 7mins elevation was 287m which will give me a benchmark for gauging my improvement through the year. Hopefully a big step towards getting my BP and weight down and clearing my head regularly.

great effort, getting yourself out there can be tough, particularly after a lay off.

I’ve barely ridden for a couple of years, anyway started doing little bits when my lad is at cubs, very similar to yourself. Today I went for a ride with AMA actual real other person who is an actual real cyclist and even though I was very much rear guard and pushed up some the spicier hills (blea tarn bit @25%) we had a jolly old time. So keep going, lad, you’ll get there! Steady away!

That sounds like excellent progression, great stuff.

Keep at it, slowly chipping away by adding a wee bit more distance, or putting in extra effort for a couple of seconds longer each time.

Alway good to hear progress updates.

Well done. I barely rode for two years after Covid. The improvements you will see in the first few weeks should be bottled. They’re so potent. And Dartmoor. Proper hills and a serious workout so don’t go too hard too soon. Devon knows how they make cyclist so fit.

Well done, and stick with it 😁

Nearly 300m elevation 6 miles is a fair amount, though Dartmoor is pretty lumpy!

A few lessons learnt, glasses needed and keep my mouth closed through puddles.

Decent mudguards on an MTB in winter are a good idea. They've really improved over recent years and you can do proper off road and still stay relatively clean these days.

I remember doing my first 10 miles about 3 years ago and feeling pretty pleased. Then 15 and then 20. All pretty big milestones at the time. Now I’m  2.5 stone lighter, Diabetes reversed, and I ride 70+ miles a week.

Keep reaching the milestones. Enjoy 😊

Nice 👍

I am very out of shape and it's not exactly motivating knowing that when I start again I'll be a lot slower and more out of breath doing the same routes as last year... your positive attitude is showing me up so maybe I'll take a leaf out of your book and get out there again soon, thanks 😀

TBH though the only reason I opened this thread was wondering how you managed to ride at all after dying on all the previous ones 😉

That is one of the many health benefits of exercise

I have got all this to come - again! I am normally fairly fit for my advanced years but I have been knocked out by a nasty chest infection that has gone on for three weeks. It's finally beginning to subside after various antibiotics but I am still wheezing like an eighty a day man. I am not looking forward to the pain when I get back on my bike but at least I can look forward to a proper ride in the near future!

Remember this post and the encouragement you got in a years time when you’re considering buying your 4th bike for a special niche that only you know you really need. All those people above are to blame.

@supernova I will I plan to buy a new bike this time next year I bought a 2nd hand job to get fit on and learn to maintain it myself I only have allocated storage for one bike so it'll be a carefully thought out decision.

I read it with my left eye so it felt like someone else.
