Went 'round Hopwas woods - distinct lack of naked witches 🙁
I don't think I've ever done a whole ride with clenched stomach muscles from paranoia though - twas knackered after 45mins!
Anyone got any top night riding tips?
Don't stop pedalling. They're watching.
Really.
Safety in numbers!
But ride with slower riders so you don't get Left behind.
They're watching.

If you find an abandoned dry powder fire extinguisher on a solo night ride don't;
1) stop and check it out to see if the pin is still in.
2) realise it's not
3) give the handle an experimental push
4) nearly crap yourself when there's a *very* loud roaring noise and the whole woods for about 20ft around you suddenly fill with a white cloud.
5) look around guiltily to see if anyone has spotted you and blind yourself with the relfected glare from your helmet light.
Do;
Leave fire extinguisher where you found it and ride away as fast as you can. You won't get *the fear* then.
One of my mates pointed out that anyone seeing this from a distance must have thought aliens had landed - clouds of white smoke, roaring noises, lights flickering in the woods.
WWW - that is laugh out loud funny 😀
Bregante - I can't find anyone slower than me 🙁
I love Hopwas woods in the dark and in the light for that matter. I have been mooching round there quite a lot this year and there are some good bits to be found. The trail pixies have been very busy. It's no alpine resort but not bad for a couple of hours riding out of the front door.
wwaswas, that's very funny. 😀
Did hopwas woods as my first solo night ride a few years ago.
Heard there's been a bit more building there but when I did it, the place still felt quiet natural. (At least on the east side)
So was definitely the scariest night ride I've down. As I entered the trees/darkness just seemed to swallow me up and I was sure there were goblins and wolves round every corner.
I've done more night riding in swinley forest now but it feels so man-made its just not as scary. 🙁
My first ever night ride in the local french woods on the CH/FR border was kicked off by the wail of an air raid siren from a local village (since found out they use it to call the part time Pompiers to the fire station).
Talk about "putting the fear of god" into someone. Hackles were up the whole ride. *shudder*
Kev
That's quality wwwas! 😀
Top tips from me.
a) Don't forget to charge your lights FULLY!
b) Check your lights are FULLY charged
c) Double check your lights really are FULLY charged
d) Pop a head torch in to your pack. Just in case, for some inexplicable reason your lights aren't fully charged.
After all. Only an absolute bell end wouldn't carry out these steps, only to find himself plunged into instant and total darkness in the middle of a welsh forest. Then whimper like a 4 year old locked in a cupboard while listening to the 'Blair Witch' type noises all around them. Only a complete tool!
wwaswas, that's very funny 🙂
Seconded, that story has really brightened up my morning 😀
Lately there's a very gothic looking Reliant Robin (seriously) being parked next the the entrance to the trails on our night ride. It's been there for a few weeks and we always have a chuckle but apparently last Monday night the owner was discovered by our group in the middle of the woods performing some kind of ritual surrounded by candles 😯
The hogs come out at night in th FoD, will they get me?
When it all goes quiet... that is when they get you.
it's not the witches you have to worry about.it's the big cats running around, that you have to be aware of 😉
