You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Doing the FoD Mini Enduro next weekend, it will be my very first experience of this format. To be fair, other than a few 12/24hr races and a couple of sport cat entries in shorter XC events, I've not got much competition experience despite over 20 years riding!
Anyway, any tips (beyond enjoying it)...?
I've got the bike, a decent sized hydration pack, Knee & Elbow Pads, an AM/trail lid (but access to a full face if it makes more sense), eye protection, decent gloves & shoes etc.
Cheers for any advice!
What to expect? Addiction, possibly.
Honestly, don't overthink it... It's basically simple but there's a lot of complexity and racecraft once you're into it. But in the first race just have a blast, and don't be afraid to screw up. IMO 😉 I still reckon of all the events and formats I've tried, it's the one that's most fun for the most people, I had a disaster of a stage today at Ae and still came to the bottom laughing my head off. It makes stories.
Fullface is totally a personal thing except when rules dictate, course, it's hard to judge the difficulty level of a race before you do it so that's not so simple! I hate racing in a fullface but there's nothing wrong with it if you want to.
Also, yellow shorts.
Prepare everything you can so you don't need to worry about anything extra on the day.
Green shorts.
It'll be just like a normal Enduro, but a bit smaller, HTH.
Don't worry about no dirty competition experience as the timed runs you'll be solo anyway so tactics won't come into it much. There'll be lots of banter, lots of people that look really quick who aren't, lots of people that look really slow who aren't, and lots of people who will be exactly as slow as they look 😉
Since it's your first on then just focus on having fun, treat it like any other ride just try and go as fast and as smooth as you can, you won't be bashing elbows with anyone, nobody will 'take' your line so just focus on having a good ride, good rides are often fast rides, and if you come out smiling it's a win either way.
If you get the option to pre-ride or inspect any of the sections then it can be well worth it just so you're not surprised by anything, but riding blind can be a lot more fun! 😀

God Dammit!
I was told anything other than Blue, just isn't Enduro! 😉

More than happy with that, and have no expectations of my own performance (not coming last would be nice, but otherwise, I'll settle for getting round in one piece).

In 2 minds about this. Firstly, we do get the option to pre-ride everything in the morning, and given that these days I ride road more than MTB, I think that my fitness is probably better than average but also I probably need the practice.
But... If I ride the course once in the morning, I risk peaking too early and being knackered in the afternoon potentially. The organisers say expect about 15 miles to get round the course once (so 30 to get round twice), which I'm ok with, but I will definitely need to make sure I keep well fuelled!
I will be there (In hardtail category) can't wait. Good thing is you get morning practice so you can make decision's about what helmet then.
BTW you need £100 deposit for the transponders so make sure to tack a card to sign-on.
I did the last one at BPW it was a great race but thing I hope they sort out for this one are All the Elite/Expert riders in the age cats not PRO-AM also the cue for sign on(was an hour long at BPW).
The pervious Mini enduro at FoD was a complete swampy mudfest. There is rain forecast for the weekend but with all this dry weather it will just keep the dust down 😉
Is there still spaces. Im looking to join my first enduro race.

Thanks for the info. I'm moving to Canada 10th of May so can't make that unfortunately. Wanted to get a bit of race experience before I went.

unless you catch the rider ahead. when I did the enduro1 at grogley last year I caught the guy in front of me on every single stage. he was pretty good at getting out the way but it still slows you up.

You will have a blast a great venue and series for your first race. A couple of tips.
*Don't over practice, many riders do this at there first event and run out of puff in the race and end up going slower than in practice.
*Take your nutrition with you, something that you are used to consuming during extended exercise. I have my own energy shake which contains carbs, sugars, protein and electrolyte.
*Build up your speed, don't get into the first practice stage at 100% race speed, that's a recipe for a short weekend.
If youre fit enough, sounds like you are- Worth getting there early, ride the course but take it easy on the stages, also note how long the transitions take as this let's you pace yourself for the race
Drink lots
Have fun
As northwind says, it is addictive !
Scott are entire open for southern enduro ?

Hopefully the venues will confirm in the next couple of weeks. I could make it live after the QECP Enduro or 2 months be for the race like the qecp events. What do you reckon?
either way itll sell out fast
2 months b4 is probably good
Have a practice run - my last mini at FOD 3 of the 4 tracks were different so I rode each once to scope them out.
WHole load of fun - some tech trails which I'm sure you've already ridden.
Cyan shorts FTW
Goggles are mandatory. I find riding to really calm, soft music like Elbow during the race runs very relaxing and it reminds me to keep my arm and shoulders loose.
deff worth riding / walking the course before your race runs so you know whats coming up and how hard / long to push in the stage
i find riding fairly comfortably within my limits for the first stage or two eg 70-80% settles me in nicely and usually leads to quicker times as i'm not crashing!
Goggles are mandatory? Doesn't seem to say that on the website?
I think the goggles comment was just a very poor attempt at humour/troling
Goggles are not mandatory but that doesn't stop me 🙂

What to expect? Fun
Take it steady on the practice &.then forget everything & over ride on the race run
Chat to complete strangers on the transitions & have a laugh!
I'd be there but had an unplanned shoulder/floor interface the other week & am a bit broken
Enjoy yourself
Dave
How did it go?
I survived!
I wasn't last!
I had fun!
I definitely wasn't competitive enough, and I definitely need more practice.
But most importantly, I looked sooooooo #Enduro !!! 😉
