Back in April I had a spill on the road which left me with some road rash scars on my knees. Though the skin has healed the scars are fragile, it's an age thing apparently, and it doesn't take much of a knock down the woods to make 'em split and bleed.

It's been suggested, by my doctor, that if I insist on mtb'ing at my age when I should know better, I should try knee pads to give them some protection.

Knee pads are a mystery to an old XC-er like me. Gnarly I'm not.

What's good, what's good value, what's good for all day wear?

Sizing is tricky to judge. Best to go in a shop and try some on.

I've had Endura MT500's and they were way to bulky and felt odd.

Just ordered a pair of Tro Lee KG5450's which cover knee and shin and apparently don't rub or feel like you're wearing them.

Everyone seemed to give them a good write up, so went with them. Still waiting for them to arrive though as they appear to be difficult to get a hold of. Just make sure you drop a size as they come up quite big.

Yep. That's my style, well, lots of pedalling, well, that and pushing.

ive got Kyle strait 661 pads and have no complaints for all day riding - although they might be a bit bulky for road riding

Try on lots of pairs and find some that are comfortable so that you actually wear them. I've got some knee pads but I didn't find them that comfortable for longer rides so only wore them occasionally.

A minor fall resulted in a pretty nasty knee injury. Now on my 3rd course of antibiotics as it keeps flaring up with new infections in the joint.

Told by the doctor yesterday that there is no way I'll be riding again in 2012 probably at least 3 months until it is fully healed.

Totally gutted as I'd set myself a target of being back on the bike by Christmas 🙁

The new Forcefield ones look like they might be more comfy than most.

Commuting and Sunday club road runs they can stay in the cupboard 😉 Off-road use only.

I wear my g-forms every off-road ride now, mostly because last time I came off on my knees I had to cut a chunk of mangled scar tissue off (leftover from a previous botched attempt at bike riding). Took a fair while to heal in the end so just not worth it these days, besides they're a handy extra layer of warmth over the knees at this of year (although I also used them with no problems in 30c+ temps in Spain earlier in the year)

I've got 661 kyle straits, there's a couple of sellers on ebay doing them about £26 I think.

While i'm posting - maybe try some 'climb on' cream. I use it on similar injuries and find it can really help skin not split again. Google it or you can pick it up in Snow&Rock.
