Hi guys,

I am just about to run my first clipless setup after 12 years of running flats.

I have just bought some specialized sport shoes and was set on time Atac alium pedals until I saw a set of look quartz pedals and the time roc attack pedals and now I am confused!

I can find plenty of reviews on the time pedals but nothing on the looks, can anyone offer any advice on my choice? I won't to choose the pair that will be easier on my knees and best for a beginners use!

Any advice would be great!

Thanks guys,
Pete

Just to mix stuff up, i really liked crank brothers when i started using slipless pedals, plenty of float, don't get clogged up with mud.

If you do get CB, get something like candy's, eggbeaters were really difficult to find when i started.

do not buy eggbeaters unless you really like servicing them. they have a bunch of o-ring seals between the clip mechanism and the internals, which degrade over time, meaning you have to keep pulling them apart and cleaning them. not a bad job, if that's your thing, but there are plenty of other things to do in life!
times have the clip mechanism all separate to the internals, so you just don't get the contamination inside.
i switched from crank brothers to times ( on 4 bikes, yes i persevered for a long while with CB, and it cost a lot to change, but after breaking an axle in half on a climb, i eventually got the message ) and would never go back. i have aliums, atacs, and the platform ones, and TBH, the aliums are probably the best of the bunch. they just offer a little more support than the atacs, but aren't quite as bulky as the platform ones. they have a very similar action to the egg beaters, shed mud and snow just as effectively, with none of the drawbacks, and are generally cheaper.

my now ex GF rode a set of these for 5 years. i took 'em off the spindle to service them, as i figured they must require some attention by now, saw that they were spotless inside, and just stuck them back together again.
no experience of the looks. they're a relatively recent introduction to the market i think.

I started with Time ATAC, but found the spring too stiff (although I think they are adjustable now). I've now been using Crank Bros Candys & mallets for years now & find them superb and have had no reliability issues.

i started on time's 8 years ago, then jumped onto the egg beaters for a couple of years (and on 3 bikes). realised they were shit, and am back on time's.

my original time pedals have only just been chucked.

go for time

No issues on my Egg Beaters, 2010 bottom of the range model I think.

Had them since October last year probably used them on average for about 20 miles a week (including a layoff), I am not a particularly smooth rider and I think I twist on them a lot.

Loads of float, I put the spacer in to see how it changed things, 'twas a mistake far too much vertical float so will take them out as soon as I remember!!!

Thanks for the advice guys, does anyone have any reviews in the look quartz pedals?

Thanks,
Pete

Surprised you have excluded shimano pedals. Little maintenance required and clip in very reliable. You can get some m520s for £20 to try them out.

Crank Brothers Candy for me, lots of float and easy to get out of once the cleats have worn a little

Atac Aliums are TEH RAWK. I've used them on-road and off. They just work. And they just keep working. And if they ever make the slightest noise then taking them apart for a regrease is a piece of cake.

Swapped Candy's for xtr - miles better IMO. Much more positive in and out. Used on road this winter as well.

I had the look pedals for a while .. not very good IMO

You have to faff about with shims to build up the cleat, and thus could never quite be sure if you had it 'right'.

Plenty of float but vague and un-convincing release .. kept getting my feet stuck in them!

Also - the cleats are poor - most of the front edge snapped off (on my pair and others I've seen) after a month.

Eggbeaters are OK but you need stiff shoes or you lose a lot of power. Candy's are better .. but nothing beats SPDs in my experience

Although many of my riding buddies swear by Time!

I had some Times back in 2008 ish, found them Ok, but quite a bit of play when clipped in, also ran Crank Bros on another bike but got a bit of leg ache due to the small surface area and again found there to be too much play and little if no adjustment, wore shed loads of paint of my rear swing arm from my feet!

Again cant believe no one has mentioned Shimanos, as 70% of riders use them. I run XTRs, they are simply divine!, however I bought mine back when they were £65, and not the current rrp / rip of £130!!. However I have got a set of £20ers on my hardtail and find them just as good. Both have taken 3 years of absolute hammer (mx XTRs are now just 2 lumps of grated, scraped and bashed alloy), never been serviced, jet washed to hell and still work perfectly

Good old shimanos all the way for me.

Kev

Any reason not to go with Shimano? They're very cheap, work well, last well, and I had no trouble adapting to them from being a long-term Time user.

£20 is difficult to argue with for dipping your toe into clipless, IMO.

only reason I am steering away from shimano is the lack of float, I am a little cautious of improper setup and knee pain!

thanks,
Pete
