First charge on an ebike?

How does this work? Does it take an extra long time to charge, the first time?

I am eagerly awaiting NBD soon because a) it's my first bike purchase since 1994, b) it's my birthday, and c) after over 2 years of long COVID this ebike is going to be what gets me back on two wheels again.

So I'm going to book a day off, in order to tackle the heady distance of 6 miles to a nearby cafe. Exciting stuff.

But which day? Is it fair to assume that I won't be able to ride it the same day it's delivered? Does it need an overnight charge first? Have seen conflicting info on the internet, but I know some STW'ers have got them. It's only a 250wh battery (hub motor) FWIW.

With Lithium polymer batteries it isn’t really a problem - it may take a few charge cycles for them to reach optimum capacity, but just let the charger do it’s work. Doesn’t matter if you use the bike without them fully charged as they don’t have a ‘memory’ like some rechargeable battery types.

I think it will depend on the output rating of the supplied charger as well as the battery capacity (and depletion level as delievred). My 540Wh battery takes around 4-5 hours to fully charge using a 4Amp charger

They very often have charge in them. For 6 miles there and back, depending on elevation you might be ok.
But no, you can charge and ride the same day no problem.

'I got a brand new ebike and didn't go for a blast straight away. I sensibly waited until the next day'...
Said nobody ever! 😉
