The gear cables are too long at the front.
It's not bad, but just enough to irritate.
I would shorten them but the gear change is so slick I can't bear to mess it up.
If I pull through the cable to shorten the outers will I haveto chuck it or will it go back in?
Should I wait till summer and replace anyway?
Pretty lame I know, but I dont like to chuck perfectly working cable inners.

Oh yeah, I also lost the hope head doctor bolt. Replaced with a crap looking one.

Otherwise it went alright.

Spend some time shortening it and then get it running slick again. If it was me that's what I would do.

Because I'm potentially the most OCD person ever at times, I'd also ring Hope and ask for a new doctor bolt.

Is it not possible to run a normal headcap with a stainless bolt into the Hope gubbins below instead of the Hope top cap and stepped bolt?

Don't bother with the crap Al hed doctor bolts. A nice steel one from any other headset/top cap will work just fine and not snap on you. Just be careful with you don't overload the bearings!

If you are shortening cables trim off any bent or frayed bits flush first with a proper wire cutter. Then they'll feed back into the outers fine. Shortening the cables can only be beneficial.

By the time you snap a Hed Dr bolt you've overtightened the head bearings anyway. Finger and thumb on the short end of the allen key is all you need.

And shorten those cables, it's a chance to practice making the gears work properly (and the gears will need adjusting soon as everything settles in anyway).

Found the bolt!
I think I will shorten the cables, they are nice and clean so I won't be dragging a load of crap through the outers.

If your worried about the inner cable fraying and not going back through the outer nicely, just wipe the inner with a bit of isopropyl alcohol to de-grease it, then play a little super glue over about a 10mm length where you plan to cut it. The super glue will wick into the strands and hold them together,(wipe off any excess), let it set and then cut it in the middle of the glued region. No unravelling, unless your cutters are completely shagged.

Small thread resurrection. Just pull the inner cable back through the shifter just a little more than is showing currently, cut the outer where you need. Pull inner back a little more, tidy up outer and push inner back through. Hey presto. Hope I'm not too late.

Successfully redone, binned one inner, saved one but...
Woke up in a cold sweat this morning.
Can't beleive I did this.
