Just wrestled a Rimpact insert onto my rear wheel (not that hard actually, just a sealant-spilling mess). Tyre seated easily and inflated to 40psi. Ridden up the road to spread the sealant around but now I can’t let any air out of the tyre through the Fillmore valve. I double-check and the valves are supposed to compatible with inserts. Any clues what’s going on and how to sort it??
Possibly the insert is a tight fit in the tyre so has effectively split it into two air chambers. Happened to me with a Presta valve, had to punch a hole through the insert using a hex key through the valve to let the air through.
There's an article on their website and we had a recent thread about it here.
As above without flow channels you can make a seal with the insert. Also rimpacts are soft and will envelop the valve entirely over time (not when brand new as a rule). When you open the valve your just pushing it down into what is effectively a sealed hole. No air will flow.
Those valves are not compatible with rimpact inserts. They only have a hole on the top, which means the insert will be sitting directly on top of the hole. When adding air the pressure will force the insert away from the valve, but when removing air it'll be sucked onto the valve, creating a seal.
Rimpact inserts have holes on the sides for this very reason...

I believe the Fillmore valves are actually insert compatible, as the plunger will push the insert away from the rim, and the air flows around the side of the plunger. Unless the insert is so tight that the plunger can't be pushed, which I expect the OP would have mentioned.
I used an apple corer to make a hole in rimpact inserts, which I align with valves, never had any issues.

Ahh oh, so they should be - but I bet the poppet thing isn't actually moving the insert enough to break the seal, or just pushing into the insert. A quick Google shows others with the same issue, resorting to modifying the rimpact inserts.
Looks like I'll need to make a hole in the insert as many of you are suggesting. In the interim, I just loosened the valve nut at the rim and pushed the whole valve up to let out some air. It's a cludge but it'll work till I can be bothered to remove the whole messy lot... Thanks for your input, everyone.
If you can deflate the tyre by that method, it suggests the problem is at the valve, rather than the insert splitting the tyre into two air chambers. As @tau11pau1 said, rather than what I said. So a hole in the insert wouldn't help.
I realise that I have a decision to make; take out the insert or use a different valve.
Both will be messy, if not particularly difficult.
I've never ridden with inserts before (never felt the need) so I'll make a call when I get back from riding for a week in Spain.
Thanks again for all your input.
I keep a tiny pipe in my on bike tool kit (from WD40 or similar) that I use if my valves get blocked, pop out the core and stick it in, only takes a second. Bizarrely, I have the same valves and Rimpact pro inserts on numerous wheels, some have never been a problem, one has! 🙂 and I’ve tried several different valves…
I had the exact same problem. The only way to get any air out initially was to unscrew the valve. Then I made a hole in the insert where the valve sits. Not problem after that.
Same here only way to fix it is to have a hole/area around the insert
the poppet doesn’t move enough to create any space when releasing air if not
if the inserts are designed with a inner air channel like Tubolights then filmores will work perfectly
in the end even with the cut away section of Rimpact to accommodate the filmores I just couldn’t be bothered, still a hassle and still a real task with build up of pressure removing the insert even at home, on the trail side I’m not even sure I’d be able to do it
I do love the filmore valves though they are genius but alas don’t work well with all inserts especially rimpacts
I had Fillmore with Cash Core and it didn't work well at all, ended up removing and replacing with the Cush Core valves.
They say they are insert compatible but I'd say that's BS as the insert pushes on the valve and makes it near impossible to get air in with a hand pump, it was hard enough with a track pump. You can try to line them up with some of the slots in the inserts but didn't work well for me.
Shame as the Fillmore are great without inserts
Yeah as above. I've just drilled some holes through my rimpacts for this reason. They should really be like this from new
Not sure what insert I'm running but they have a little cutout where the valve is and work fine with my Fillmore, my Nukeproof Ard also works fine with them.
