So I've bled hydraulic discs and shortened hoses etc many a time but never fitted a new caliper to an existing system.
I know I could draw down the fluid from top to bottom of the system and through the empty caliper, but would it make sense to get some fluid through it first? Or just do a top down bleed/fill then bottom up?
It's a Shimano caliper on a road sti.
Just fit it and go bottom up. Of course, you'll end up expelling all of the old fluid but there's no harm in that.
Really? Seems like a long way to go to get all the air out to start with?
I suppose it is easier that way with a funnel at the top
Yea I might be more tempted to do a gravity bleed to get most of the air out at the bottom, otherwise you’re pushing a lot of air up the hose and into the mc
Then bottom up
Good idea to tap the caliper and hose as you’re doing this to dislodge any stubborn bubbles
Either way .. but always a good idea to do a full bleed and fluid replacement when the chance arises. Tends to be that because its mineral oil you can get away without until it either gunks the master cylinder or caliper then its a lot of work and time to clean (usually not economic)
