Short story version - my spectral (2015) had a cracked rear swing arm, new frame (2017 version) was sent out 4 months ago and last night I stripped the rear end down to re grease and clean all the linkage. Every linkage bolt was massively over torque and one of the bolts and been cross threaded but still forced home! fail# luckily the thread in the swing arm is okay (checked it with the bolt from the other side and goes in nice and smoothly) but the f....ed bolt is missing a tonne of the thread. I have emailed canyon this morning to get a new one sent out. But knowing canyon (8 weeks to get my frame sorted!!!) I’m very concerned I won’t have it sorted for the first tweedlove enduro race which I have already invested quite a few hundred pound into. Race entry, accommodation, travel etc.
So to the question. Instead of relying on canyon i wanted to try and source a replacement bolt myself.
I wasn’t able to find the bolt specs I need, but i was able to find the heli coil specs in the swing arm that the bolt threads into. From the heli coil specs i’m assuming someone could tell the bolt spec i need?
Spec is M12xP1.25x0.7D
thanks
Sounds like and M12 x 1.25 (which is fine thread, 1.75 is standard for an M12). That sounds pretty big to me for a suspension bolt. Can you measure the other one?
Quick guide here on how to measure a 'bolt'. Thread gauges are pretty cheap to buy, less than a fiver off e-bay.
It'll be a bit more tricky if it's got a plain shank that's a non-standard size and you'll also need to buy the right grade, don't just buy the cheapest monkey metal one, get a high tensile 8.8 or 10.1.
I'm guessing you've seen this?
Is it part no.5 you're talking about?
The thread on the bolt will be M12x1.25 (the 0.7D refers to the length of the helicoil, as in length=70% of the thread diameter).
The bolt is a 'special' and I'd imagine produced specifically for Canyon. Looks like it might be some form of shoulder bolt where the unthreaded part will be highly toleranced for a correct fit.
I'm afraid you're not going to find a replacement in B&Q ☹️
Although if you take the offending part int a local machine shop, they might be able to reverse-engineer one for you.
"Massively over torqued", how could you tell once the thread lock's set?

I'd have thought 12mm machine screws on a bike were more likely to be aluminium than steel!
That said, the grade will still be important. I'd wait for the genuine part from canyon, have you tried just ordering the part rather than trying to go though the warranty department.
thanks for all the replies, Canyon have already replied to my query and a bolt is in the process of being dispatched. So this seems a much quicker process than my frame warranty.
and it was bolt number 5 I was after, and completely agree it was a long shot trying to find something suitable myself. but you never know 🙂
The bolts didn't have thread lock on them and I've had this frame for 4 years and have done bearing cleans/replacements 3 times a year. So I could tell they were too tight.

Yeah, from the OP I thought he knew he needed something standard. Pretty sure my Zesty takes normal cap heads rather than bespoke fittings, but I've never had to change them, which begs the question......
have done bearing cleans/replacements 3 times a year.
What are you doing to the bike that it needed that level of care? Granted I have a rigid SS that take a lot of the winter riding abuse, but you must be putting some serious hours in through some biblically shite conditions to necessitate that!

My thoughts exactly. Katie's Spectral is just coming up to 3 years old. It does a 40+km ride pretty much every weekend (more in summer) plus a couple of uplifted weeks a year, plus weeks and weekends away in the UK. I've taken the caps off once a year, wiped them, put some more grease on top and retorqued the bolts. It's still on the original bearings...
