So i've got a huge toolbox under the stairs which is filled with many household tools of none bike related matter, leaving most my bike stuff in various kitchen draws, and some of it in one of these...

[img] [/img]

Any decent toolboxes which are small and portable but able to fit all the most common bike bits for Sunday afternoon fettling? Alan keys, torque wrench, lubes, grease, cleaning brushes, etc with some compartments for organising stuff?

How do you organise your bike tools?

Or are they scattered everywhere and require a treasure hunt?

Big stanley toolbox for everything and all the big stuff, then a smaller light 16" toolbox for all the general stuff which serves for most jobs and goes in the car for biking holidays etc, but goes in the big toolbox if i'm being tidy. Given up with the internal trays, just chuck it all in and then keep all the little bits like bolts, ferrules, brake bits etc in bait boxes.

I have a proper bike tool, tool box, with several layers and tools in their correct places. I also have a separate smaller tool box specifically for the track bikes. I still play hunt the allen key sometimes, but have multiple sets on multitools and torque wrench.

Don't mix bike and non-bike tools is my first rule.

Big roller drawer chest and small tool board, plus toolboxes for lesser used stuff. Still not enough. MOAR MAN STUFF!

My stuff is all over the place. Usually wherever I put something down briefly and then can't find it again. Whole house is a bike workshop with bike bits trailing everywhere.

Though I have more recently tried to keep many tools in a couple of tool boxes. One I keep in the car, but then I need it in the house sometimes, so I'm thinking of doubling up on tools so there's a ready box in the car plus another set in the house for everyday tools and spares.

There's also a cupboard full of random used bits. Many could be sold but it's so much hassle. I hate selling stuff on ebay etc. I did propose a local bike community sale event, maybe raising funds for trail building, but it never really happened.

I had a small metal tool box for bike-specific tools. It got to be a pain in the arse because it was too small and lacked any internal organisation.

I have now upgraded to one of these beauties:

[img] [/img]

Tools are in the top section, lid opens to be a little work surface, small parts and bottles of lube/oil/grease are in the middle section, and larger parts/spares are in the bottom section. Its awesome. But it does need moar stickerz

They are usually somewhere in between all the cast off bits of bike, van, Landrover and climbing kit on the garage floor...

I use an ancient tool roll... which now has all sorts of bits falling out of it.

Need something else.

I use a drawer in my tool chest for the specialist, occasional use ones. The everyday ones are in a soft, fold out case that I can take to the bike stand or with me in the car.

3 drawer red Halfords metal one does the job for me, plus a couple of shelf storage bins for parts, zip ties, tape etc, all in the garage on shelves. Track bike spanners etc in kit bag specific for track so I dont get there and realise I dont have stuff 🙂

Organising bike tools....??
How many hours do you have in your days?
Mine are on any surface in the garage above the grasp of kids.

Ooooh, smell the politics of envy 😉

My tools segue from a state of perfect order and convenience to one of chaotic horizontal distribution and obfuscation. Then once a quarter my OCD can take no more, and they are restored to their rightful place on the wall or in appropriate tool box.

They also bask in the heady fug of wood smoke, craft ale and Radio 6 Music.

In a box, how crude! You first concern should be: 'will my spanners/hex keys be hung in descending or ascending order on the shadow board?'

My shadow board has its own dedicated lamp, like a picture in a gallery...

Have a self-regulating Most Popular Tools toolbox which is about the same size as a shoe box. In terms of organisation, the tool I used last is on the top

I have this, which contains 90% of all required bike tools, spares and widgets, 100% of the time.
Everything else is in the bike cupboard/ shed/ wardrobe/ under the bed/ in the shed/ in the vault/ bathroom cabinet/ knicker draw.

Little tool box with commonly used stuff, allen keys smaller spanners cable cutters etc, big tool box with tray for smaller stuff (lockring/bb tools etc) and main body for bigger stuff, hammers, molegrips, big adjustables etc. Upper kitchen cupboard with spare brake pads, drivechain stuff. Cupboard under sink for majority of my spare parts. Shelves in cupboard under stairs for tubes, sus/chain oil, spokes, gear cables, various diameter waste pipe for certain bike jobs. Spare wheels/frames in the attic, spare (probably never to be used again - but you know, just in case) wheels/frames in the shed.
I appear to have a lot of spares.
(and a very understanding wife)

I have a tool wall in my man cave, obvs.
how I yearn for a mancave with a tool wall.

I have a proper bike tool, tool box, with several layers and tools randomly thrown in post usage. I also have a separate smaller tool box specifically for the nuts n bolts/screws/tape/anything smaller than a spanner. I always play hunt the allen key, but have multiple sets with spaces where the allen key has been thrown in the first layer of the tool box and no torque wrench.

I mix bike and non-bike tools.

My sailing tool box looks exactly like my bike tool box except it has leaking GRP adhesives and thin layers of carbon fibre mixed in with rusting Holt cleats and meters of halyard and assorted rope, none of any use as they're all too short.

FIFM

there is a three tier system in my garage. A draw in the work bench with every day essentials.

It has a set of allen keys, tyre levers and a patches. It also may house 'the next job'.

There is toolbox one which has all the genral tools in (another set of allen keys inc.) torx bits, screwdriver, cable cutters etc etc.

Then toolbox two contains larger job tools - noramlly only cracked out for a bike build or similar - it has the bottom bracket tools, star nut fitter, chain whip etc.

The heaset press and wheelbuilding tools have a drawer of there own.

A place for everything....

I used to do that, then I ripped all my tools to MP3 and put them in my iToolkit.

Small box for everyday bike tools. Large box for occasional specialist tools etc. Open basket on a shelf for fluids - lubes, sprays, sealant, brake fluids and bleed kits.

I would love a dedicated man-world with a tool board, and then a separate set of race/event tools in a single appropriately sized tool box.

Tools in a toolbox, obvs.

All bike related ****tery, lights, spares, brackets, saddles get stuck in old shoe boxes.
Neatly, mind.

Tyres, tubes, panniers, backpacks all in bags (mostly Aldi 🙂 ) hung from the beams.

Mudguards, racks, wheels hung from walls or roof.

Cleaning stuff/lube in a big council recycling box which gets filled up with a random assortment of all the other stuff when we go away.

Just to prove that I am not a messy sod when it comes to tools, I have a large sheet of 9mm ply on the wall above my workbench. This holds the bulk of the tools that I own (yes, marked out in size order and grouped by tool type) so that I can a) see which ones are missing and b) quickly identify what I need for a specific job. Tools I need for a job then come out with me to the job and go back on the board when I am finished.

Bike tools [generally] live on the workstand.

Plumbing tools (rarely used) reside in a large toolbox under the bench along with the power tools and the socket set. I'm currently waiting for time to go through my dad's old toolbox to organise the tools from there onto the board too.

I'm not OCD in the slightest, but I do like to be able to find things (see the other thread on Smith's third rule of tool ownership).

Seem to have acquired loads of tools for biking and DIY and materials over the years so it needed to be sorted out if I was to fit a respectful number of bikes in the garage

I built myself a 3m long work bench with a shelf running underneath. the Floor below and the shelf hold about 12 plastic boxes with different things in them. these are where the DIY tools and stuff live. This gets them out of the way meaning the work benchtop is free for bike tools and bits.

I have a 5 draw Halfords chest which holds all bike tools, but they are shared with a smaller plastic toolbox which goes with me on trips away. I also have a kind of metal filing cabinet from ikea which has 8 shallow draws - this holds all the important bike bits that I never use but can't get rid of.

In reality quite a lot of the tools live on the workbench top so that I can spend 20 minutes looking for the right allen key.
