I'm thinking of entering one of the Fetish UK Gravity Enduro races - probably Hamsterly or Afan.
I've never raced before, but I've been riding predominantly DH at the Forest of Dean for around 9 months.
A guy I know said I'd probably do okay, because there are loads of middle aged men with all the gear and no idea who turn up (no offence middle aged men), but I'm not so sure.
So how high is the level of riding at these races? I'd love to race, but I don't want to embarrass myself, and also it's £60 - so I want to know I'm not wasting my money!
Thanks

If you have ridden DH at the FOD for 9 months you really shouldnt worry. (or even bother asking)

Unless you plan to win the event, almost anyone will be able to ride it and have fun.

Google for video clips if your not sure.

Okay thanks yeah I guess I'll just go for it - I've found some helmet cam footage, and some of the guys look pretty fast...

You get fast people and slow people at every race. You'll be fine.

It's more demanding than, say, your average XC race but there's a huge spread of skills- and the killer app of this enduro stuff is that it's still a great laugh even if you're not quick.

Maybe someone can suggest some representative trails to try? At innerleithen it's easy to find and try the offpiste trails that make up most of the stages, but I don't know the southern venues at all.

This was my favourite stage from last year, gets fun from about a minutes in:

Check my channel for some other stages from Dyfi and also the Mondraker Event. http://www.youtube.com/user/anoobis
I'm fairly regular at FoD and would say that technically you won't find much that is any more difficult than FoD. The sprints mid-stage will be a test and also Dyfi was a case of how big your balls were on the descents. technically alright, just scary fast. which makes for a nice video.

Also its definitely not the Fetish series any more...

I really enjoyed Hamsterley last year. I came stone dead last. I intend to improve on that this year.

@dirtbiker : fair enough that last descent was pretty damn fast! How'd you do?
Is it just the UK gravity enduro now?

@dirtbiker - that video of the stage at the dyfi round is great. It was a tricky stage at the start to be fair, I went straight over the bars on the drop in!!! Such good fun though!

@op - I thought the standard of rider was pretty high on the gravity enduro series, but all good people and friendly, go for it! As for what bike, any decent trail bike will do but for me the perfect bike would be something fairly light and pedalable with a about 160mm travel. Oh and you need to be fit!! Enjoy 🙂

I took part in both the coed y Bernin and dyfi gravity enduro, the dyfi was superb ,great fun.

As others have said don't underestimate the level of fitness required, I made all the start times with a few minutes to spare and was very lucky to reach the second after a puncture.

I was late arriving on the practice the day before and rode 4 out of 5 stages blind.
I held my own on the dh bits but got overtaken on the uphill portions by some very fast riders, it was a true test of overall skill and fitness.

Fitness! I bonked like a swine on my way to stage 4 at Dyfi.

Really great weekend though, everyone was friendly and chatty and helpful. Nobody in pyjamas or sneering. Nobody being a dick at all really!

I only raced Dyfi, and did so on my hardtail. The trails were great, though, as said, very fast and straight. I started doubling the whoops at the end of stage 4 and nearly went back in time. I shouldn't worry about the level of riding, there folks of all speeds and skill.

I'll be doing a couple again this year I think.

I'd like to take this on as well but being 48 going on 12 and gave up smoking two years ago I'm worried about the time between timed sections. Is there like an average speed you need to go between the timed stages ie. 10mph.
