So, my sister is getting married in July - the wedding is at my parents house in North Devon and in our infinite wisdom myself and Mrs Beer have decided to book the ferry from Dublin rather than flying...
The crossing is Dublin to Hollyhead, its a 10min drive to ferry port on this side, but then a minimum of a 5.5hr drive on the other side.
I'm taking my bike, which will be carried on a Saris Bones rack on the back of our trusty Fiesta.
Should i worried about leaving quite an expensive bike on the back of the car during the crossing? I know there's no access to the cars during, but should i be looking into locking the bike to rack?
Any tips on locks?
Should i remove my AXS reverb and lock it in the car?
Any other tips?
I wouldn't be worried about locking it up specifically for the ferry crossing as it can't really go anywhere while the ferry's in motion - but I'd want it locked on for the 5.5 hr drive for my peace of mind. You're bound to stop for fuel / coffee etc. Cable lock through the towing eye maybe? Remove anything easily removed?
Its a Saris Bones rack so not tow-bar mounted - its just strapped to the boot.
I think the plan would be that one of us stays with the car during stops.
I was thinking cable lock around bike/rack and maybe a d-lock through the frame & back wheel.
If someone really wants it, I guess there's nothing really to stop them pulling the entire rack/bike off the car.
As above, ferry not an issue, even if someone tampers or tries take it while on boat can't get off with it.
For extra peace of mind could wait around deck until last person up, but then risk not getting decent seats upstairs 🤷♂️ maybe divide and conquer, one goes to grab decent seats other waits on car deck until bitter end.
Travelled Scotland Ireland routes for 20 yrs now with bikes on cars and never once had issue or been concerned.
I would go to a yacht chandler and get a 3m to 5m length of stainless wire with a soft eye in each end. Loop the wire round the bike and through the door seal or boot seal and lock it to a solid point like a seat frame, or if your back seats fold down, the brackets they latch onto. Or possibly, the underbody of the car may have holes through it that you can loop through. The length depends on where in the car you can secure it.
Any other tips?
When you lock the car on the ferry deck, lock it with the key in the door, not the remote. Usually, that sets the alarm but doesn't activate the motion sensors, so the ferry moving on the waves doesn't set the alarm off.
The space between car on the ferry would make it pretty hard to steal something. Possible I suppose., But very hard
