Got it from Merlin to replace my SLX 12 speed shifter (don't ask). Do they work differently?
It's only clicking once and then the cable stop moving, baffling.
I never had a new faulty Shimano gear part in 35 years, what am I doing wrong?
You didn't release the clicks before tightening the cable?
SLX doesn't have Multi Release or Instant Release
Wasn't there a shifter that only does one gear at a time to help preserve the drivetrain on battery bikes? Got that by accident?
Cheers. I just tested it out of the box before installation fortunately. It moves the cable one and then it's stuck, you can only move the cable the other way, once too. Bizarre.
I always assume it's user error as it normally is. Particularly with Shimano. On this occasion I had to put it back in the box as a non-starter.

Is this with tension on the cable?
If the cable is allowed to go slack in the shifter - i.e. you don't keep it taught when you release the trigger - it can come out of its groove in the cam inside the shifter and get trapped in the mechanism. The only way I could get it out when this happened to me was to unscrew the shifter casing to remove the cable.

Yeah, that's basically how I ****ed mine. It wasn't attached to the derailleur and I didn't keep the cable under tension properly when testing it.
Damn. It makes sense. I have always tested my shifters before instal and never had issues but I can see how it can happen.
Also happens with road/gravel brifters, even when the cable is attached. If you release too many gears at rest the slack in the cable builds up and then get stuck. You can test away just apply tension while doing it. Shifter is likely fine just needs the cable moving back into place.
^ as above. It ends up both jamming the end bobble and folding the cable. Replace cable, and you need to open the wee cable port to see what's happening.
