Someone came rumbling past us last night on a fatbike with those fancy pants Jones handlebars. Was it a STWer?

I always expected them to be slow, but he had quite a pace on!

Thursday night = Brighton mtb Stanmer ride - I think Alex(?) from there has a Jones with truss fork/jones bar fat tyres.

It's not about the bike 😉

It was a little earlier than the BMTB ride, around 6.30ish. Quite a few people out last night.

It sounded very cool on the hardpack, more of a deep growl than a knobby buzz!

Yeah it would have been him, he normally rides around a bit before the ride and is the only person I've ever seen there with the bike you describe.

If he was wearing lycra leggings and glasses definitely him!

Yes, I know him, but I'm sworn to secrecy over his name.
'Tis a very nice bike indeed and, yes, he's very fast.

I just thought the low pressure and masses of rubber would be draggy, they don't look too whippety!

I understand the rolling resistance, suspension effect, yada yada yada but I've only really seen photos or those slow beach/snow riding vids people sometimes put up. Or those photos of fatbikes leaned chubbily against a tree.

I shouldn't be surprised that Brighton has a representation of eccentric bikes!

If you see someone mincing about at on a very black Trance, say hello 🙂

dunno about impressive bikes but he riding group i stumbled upon at stanmer last sunday morning contained a mightily impressive beard.

30+ riders at stanmer, 1 (me) at wild park. freeriders are a bunch of lazy buggers.

Wild Park's nice and quick at the moment, shame some of it has deteriorated/been blocked by trees.

This might be a bit of a shock to you but some people can ride almost anything fast. 😉

Fatbikes with a good rider powering them can be a who lot faster round a trail than your average joe.

I have to admit I only saw him coming past on a car width trail, but he seemed very focused. I'll take the communal word that he's got teh skillz.

I get that good riders are just that, but I don't think it's ridiculous to see something as hefty as a fatbike and not be filled with the same feelings as one may get from a fully aero carbon TT bike.

Hippos can allegedly reach 30ish mph, it's still going to look odd

😀

On a serious note just try one if you get the chance. They're just so much fun. A little bit slow getting up to speed, but once you're there it's a bit like riding a monster truck.

Both of these options fill me with a curiosity I'm not entirely comfortable with 😐

I'm worried once I try I won't look back. You can decide which option I'm talking about.

tazzy.

You're far to dirty for me to allow you to ride [s]with[/s] me without the protection of a dualply DH tyre.
I'd let you choose the compound and knob size though.

The bike had silvery (ti?) H-bars and possibly a truss fork. Don't think it was that chap/you.

The rider had a beard and a determined look in his eye, probably as we were climbing slowly in his path of fat destruction talking about the last trail we'd just ridden.

Probably futonrivercrossing - he's not too slow, though last week the Jones was 29er at both ends and he couldn't quite keep up with me. 😉 But my knees been hurting since, so I appear to be paying for being faster than usual...
