Sorry total newb here.
I have a hardtail powerfly trek ebike, and been craving for an upgrade to a fs levo for a while.
however I'm doing more local riding these days, and traveling a bit less (scotland). My local trails are quite sandy with undulating dunes, and I do sink a bit.
I can't quite square double the price for FS for this riding, so I'm wondering if fattie tyres are a good compromise.
So my main question is can I put any fat tyres on a trek powerfly, and do I need new rims etc.
Secondly, would a FS make any difference to traction on these dunes?
How much am I looking for a fattie upgrade. And finally which route would you take here?
very very unlikely you can put fat 4" tyres in a non fat frame - measure your clearances
Edit - personally I would buy a calibre dune and add a tongsheng kit - they do a fat bike one. cheapest way into a fat e bike.
FluffyP, your thinking is sound I.e fatter tyres will make a material difference to your experience of riding on that terrain.
However, unlikely you'll get full on fat bike tyres into a non fat bike frame.
But, moving to the fattest tyres you can in your current frame will give a big improvement unless current tyres are close o the max. Semi fat tyres would give you what you are after.
I've not ridden an bike but it seems to me that an ehardtail with semi fat tyres would be a very versatile bike. So think about that before going full suss for your next ebike.
Increased drag not an issue, ability to run at lower presser gives greater comfort and traction.
Re your question would a full suss work better on the trails you are riding. I suspect it would but marginal gains at best. I suspect you're at risk of getting a 100 different opinions on this point.
