So, are these things really as terrible in UK mud as I've heard?
Currently ride a Stumpy 29er which I love, but my eye keeps getting drawn to the Stumpy 6Fattie thing
Real world experiences please
My Fattie6 is 'interesting' in the mud. I bought a second set of 29er wheels for that reason. But in the dry, those 3" tyres are unbelievable!
Things get fun with wide tyres in the mud! Off-camber trails with a soft top layer are interesting as well 🙄 Lots of comedic fun for your mates! Aggressive treads help but don't really fully solve the problem.
I absolutely love mine, as stated there are some conditions where its not perfect, but barrelling into dodgy lines I'd not attempt on smaller tyres, in pretty much any weather condition is hilarious.
It takes a while to get over the bouncy feeling over larger stones/rocks, and a bit of squirm on bigger landings/fast berms, but once you are expecting it its not an issue.
Do you have issue with calf rub on the stays?
I only tried a relatively fast combo, a nic/ron 3.0 pair and tbh found them dismal in the wet. And you think, fair enough, a 2.3 nic/ron pair would be dismal at mud too... But they'd be fast. The 3.0 nic/ron wasn't fast- in fact barely faster than a pair of 2.3 minions.
I didn't try any of the newer, knobblier tyres- maybe a set of Plus minions would have changed my mind. But presumably at the expense of more drag so I still don't think they'd compete.
Now ymmv. Scotroutes bought my Nic off me and he finds it good for his mud. Where I care about mud grip is tweed valley evil steep muddy offpiste and the like, and that's a harsh test. I went back to 29ers, it's just flat out better where it counts for me.
No calf rub, but then a flamingo would make fun of my legs...
I do suffer from pedal strike with the 650b+ wheels. Even round Thetford it's noticeable and annoying.
My 4.8" JJs are fine in the mud and awesome fun in any conditions I've tried in the last 6 months. On the Scott Big Ed there's no calf rub at all and I don't even notice the Q factor unless I look at the width of the BB which is borderline comical. I'm also within top 5-10% on all the Strava segs I've tried on the fattie so they aren't slow! Im faster on some segs than on the skinny bike and others slower but always within seconds of one another. Just building a plus bike at the mo which I think gives the best of both, despite the skinny 2.8" tyres 🙂
I don't notice calf rub, but there is often a rub mark in the mud on the swingarm both sides, so it does happen, just not enough to be noticeable.
I get a few pedal strikes, but only run about 20% sag on the shock which mitigates it quite a bit. The general consensus from the few 6fattie threads seems to be the Fox Factory shock/fork option gives a little more support and again cuts down on pedal strikes.
I enjoy riding my fuse in the mud. It took a little while to adjust too but other than that I felt I still had more grip than my 29er in most of the muddy climbing situations.
No calf issues but the occasional/rare pedal strike.
It is faster than my previous 29er. First ride out round the Thetford loops on the Fattie and I got PRs on nearly every segment.
I haven't fiddled with the sag yet to help the pedal strikes.

No. Just like any other tyre size, it's all down to the tyres.
Had a Stache for a month now and I'm loving it. Took a few rides to get tyre pressures right and I'm still messing with the cockpit. Running a Vee Bulldozer upfront and it seems great in all conditions. Have a chuppacabra out back and it's not the best in mud. Then again I've had normal sized tyres that were worse.
as you know, i am not one to say something is good to save face or because i got one.
so, the jones plus i bought fitted with 3'' chronicles, was absolutely shyte in mud.
mated with a 1 x 11 groupset, it was useless in mud. all the mud picked up on the back tyre was then dumped directly on the chain.
when on the largest cog the chain actually acted like a mud scraper to be honest.
one of the few reasons i sold it.
