Hi,
Behind the times I know, but what would you recommend?
I'm looking for 80 mm ish rims on 150/15 and 177/12 and easy tubeless.
Thanks!
Hope fatsno hubs, only had Specialized fat boy SL but they are very similar/almost identical to DT BR710s and they seem pretty good, if a faff to tubelesserise.
or a DT BR2250 wheelset.
or if I was flush, HED carbon rims with aforementioned hope hubs
Yep, BR710 on Hope fatsno for me or the DT BR2250 wheelset (which is the same rims on DT Swiss hubs) if you prefer.
ICAN Carbon wheelset. Light, strong, tubeless easy and very resonable price.
Why buy some hubs and separate rims full of holes, pay for a wheel build and struggle to make it tubeless? And pay more for it all than the ICAN stuff?
Mulefut rims on anything, really easy rims to tubeless try http://www.justridingalong.com/
Hope Fatsno hubs with DT Swiss BR710 rims here. Ludicrously lovely things they are - brilliant.
They are light but I was a little underwhelmed by them when it came to riding them hard. Read the review and you will see my thoughts on them.
I would avoid HEDÂ having read drJon's experience when he broke his. Have a look at his blog, drjon's wanderings. Jon knows his onions and I trust his opinions.
What kind of riding are you planning on doing? Surly rims tend to be a little heavier but I have singularly failed to dent clown shoes and rolling daryls. The My Other Brother Daryl's look to be a good compromise for weight, strength and tubeless compatibility.
I also liked the Sun Ringle Mule Fat's on my test Fat Caad.
Hope this helps?
Sanny
Mulefut rims +1
You'll not get the br2250 wheelset in a 177 rear end - it's only 190/197.
But br710 rim is the same with a 177 hub. Not many about so hope seems to fit the bill and i believe is upgradeable to other widths
Hope fatso are the goto fat bike hub of choice. But there are others out there. DT Swiss if you want faster or changeable engagement speeds, Halo and salsa are a little cheaper but less bling, and many more.
Rims, 80mm would give you the choice of almost any brand on the market. Personally I have Fatlab's which were a sinch to set up tubeless (pop up first try every time). DT Swiss seem to be a goto choice due to low weight and relatively low cost.
Thanks everyone,
I'm looking to build up a do it all sort of fat bike for use on the south coast natural trails, heaths, beaches, caggy bridletracks etc and am a heavy gung ho rider so would not want light weight at the expense of reliability/strength.
I'd like Surly MOBD rims but can't find any complete wheels or builders using them, otherwise I guess Mulfuts look good.
Or perhaps the Alex Blizzerk 90/Salsa hubs builds that Merlin are offering, has anyone used them and would 90mm rims be too wide for 3.8-4.3 tyres )I'm thinking Nates or Edna's).

nope. It’s 170/177 or a different hub for 190/197 the difference is QR/Thru axle, like 135/142

Because you can build up the ICAN rims with DTSwiss butted spokes and a Hope hub for a far nicer wheelset. đŸ™‚
Mulefats here, only ones I have ever run though. Â Running 80mm and 3.8 tyres. Easy to on tubeless.
Not sure but I guess there is only really a step change if you go with carbon rides.
