to go on a kona unit - steel 29er set up 1x10.
used as general transporter and off road where tractor's not worth it.

could set either up for about £200 or less.
if fat: i have carbon forks which'll take up to a knard /rabbithole combo, though i'm thinking knard + p35s or blunt 35 as they're now called.

suss fork could be a reba rl 80mm, cheap as chips on merlin cycle just now

what should i go for?

No idea "how it is " on tarmac as I try not to ride on the road. 😉

I've only ridden fat, and not 29+, it was nothing like suss.

I tried half fat, I didn't see the point at all.

Knards on Rabbit Holes fly on tarmac!, agree crap in mud!

front 29+ on a 29er rear would be fine, half fat makes no sense at all- I have a mates Jones SS with fat front sitting here, did nothing for me compared to 29+ each end-until it rained! 🙂 full fat on Nates now for slop trails!

Krampus I tried was nothing like I expected. It rolled as well as the Ralphs I use. 29+ front for me come spring.
