Satisfying my fat bike curiosity with a day's hire in Aviemore on Friday. Any recommendations for routes to put it through its paces welcome. I'd like to try a variety of terrain, hopefully a bit of snow, and don't mind doing a fair distance. Cheers.

Very much depends on snow level and condition. It's just been snowing today, with more forecast for tomorrow so hopefully a decent covering for the weekend.

Possibles;

Burma Road will get you high enough and there's a good ride back via Carrbridge (though a part has been recently sanitised)

Glenmore - Ryvoan - Nethybridge - An Slugan might give you a good range of terrain.

Up the ski road to the Sugar Bowl car park, then the old zig-zags to the ski car park and then head across to Coire an Lochan would almost guarantee snow. Might be too soft in places still.

This was last Sunday

Already have plans for Friday...

on an assumption that you're hiring from Bothy Bikes, they may well be able to indicate where would be good route. Ryvoan and round Forest Lodge, Braes of Abernathy would always get a result, over to Nethybridge for some singletrack fun.

Or up to Glen Feshie if you can manage the miles. Loch Einich might see more more snow - though parts of the track have been washed away I think?

The lower route to Loch Einich was covered by a small landslip. It's still passable with a bit of heft but the upper track is clear (though quite a bit of snow on it last week). Crossing the Beanaidh will likely involve wet feet.

Will check these out, cheers.

Yes, hiring from bothy bikes who have offered to give route advice too (nothing specific).

Might be too soft in places still.

Hoping to find out exactly how soft too soft is 😀

Loch Einich is looking tempting, despite being out and back.

Going up Glen Feshie and then over to Inshriach would be a good variety, but not keen on the road miles. It's pity there isn't a way over from Loch Einich. Not one for this time, but for a future epic day out, is there any way to get a bike up and over from Loch Einich to Glen Feshie?

Was planning a full report with pics and musings, but to summarise:

I went up to Loch Einich, via Loch an Eilein, and back, with a detour up and the first bit of Larig Ghru singletrack for some techy fun. Bloody hard going in the wet sticky snow but good fun.

It gave me lots to ponder about fat bikes in general.

Einich to Feshie - not really. Sgorr Gaoithe sort of gets in the way. Heading up to and across the Moine Mhor would be Purgatory. Your only route is past Loch Gamhna to Lagganlia.

Did you get across the Beanaidh ok?

Ponder away

To be honest I have been for a while and was hoping this would give me the answer one way or another, but nope. I guess it's all part of the fun 8)

Sounds intriguing.

What are looking for the fatbike to do? Is it supposed to be one bike to cover all your off-road riding, or an n+1 to give something different? What did you like and dislike about it?
