Should be getting some new wheels built for my Fat bike in the next month or so - being new to the fat bike thing, what the stw collective thoughts on rim width for all year round trail riding with 4" tyres.

My thoughts are: 70mm rims would provide a rounder profile so less drag, but also less grip.
Where as a 100mm rim provides a squarer profile - so more grip but also drag. And and 80mm rim will be some where between the two.

They'll definatly be on hope hubs - and I hope to have some form of carbon rims (budget depending), HED / wiskey parts co / Nextie or the new ritchey rims all of which are different sizes (as well as cost)

I don't know about your comments on drag.

I though wider rims were better at lower pressures, and that was the main thing

IMO
In land trail riding 70mm to 80mm with 3.8" tyres
Beach & sand dune riding 100mm, but only if your frame will fit a 4.8" tyre

John Climber has it. I wouldn't consider 100mm rims unless you are running the bigger tyres. If it is mostly trail I'd even consider 65's.

IME I've not encountered any UK conditions where my 65mm rims with 4" or 5" tyres have caused me a problem - I'm yet to be convinced that for UK conditions you need anything more than 65mm-70mm as it gives the tyre a nice, rounded profile for trail use. No problems with beaches and rock crawling too - wider rims just add weight, possibly increase rolling resistance and increase the chance or rim strike. Off to the arctic in 2 weeks with 65mm rims and studded Dillinger 5s so maybe I'll change my views after that?
